Penny’s Big Breakaway really suffers hard from the bugs it has and it is a shame this game got released in its current state. The idea behind it, I think is quite nice. Using a yoyo to get across places, using it to destroy things. The feeling is very much in the Sonic range or any other 3d platformer that tries hard to shine in a genre that is already overpopulated.
But then you just sigh, because your little character often borks on you. Like when I jumped on a hill, it refused to let me jump a second time or walk backward. Not just once, but a few times in a row, each time the same solution, waiting for it to either stop moving on its own, which is tedious at best. Also, the annoyances you get at being unable to see at times where exactly you are while jumping…
A lot is going wrong and the overly cute atmosphere honestly does it no good. I am also astounded at some of the reviews out there, also clamoring they had a ton of bugs, but still giving it a high score. Well, not me, spoiler alert, this is getting a failing grade in its current condition. I really think the polishing of this game is so bad, it deserves the 3 I will be giving.
It doesn’t just stop at the game graphics, but also the mechanics, I really struggled at times with the controls and I just had a bad experience all over. It just does not do it for me. Penny’s Big Breakaway is a rather big disappointment.
