Review: Foamstars

Welcome to our review of Foamstars, a new 4v4 battler that uses foam in a lighthearted way to do battles.

Fight foam with foam and blast through battles using your bubbly arsenal to attack, build and defend.
Welcome to Bath Vegas, home of the Foamstars, the quirky and colourful cast of athletes taking part in Foamsmash. Only those few with enough charisma and skill will be crowned Foamstars.

Join the 4 vs. 4 party and create 3D battles with mountains of foam, as it builds and alters the terrain around you. Shaping the landscape will give your team the upper hand and keep your opponents on their toes! With multiple PVP modes, a PVE mode, and a plethora of customisation options, there’s never a dull time in the city of Bath Vegas.

Get ready for foam-filled-fun content updates every season that will make this party even better. Well, better than it is now. Honestly and bluntly speaking, Foamstars faces one of the hardest challenges out there in gaming, it has to compete with one of Nintendos’ more popular IP, namely Splatoon.

While it does try to bring its own pizzazz to the genre, it sadly fell short in more than a few ways. Splatoon on the other hand is a very high bar to compete with. From the start, it is clear that Foamstars is supposed to be more lighthearted and you do get a few different approaches, like how the foam can sort of build walls, there are different special attacks as well. The main goal is also not to paint the floors, but to defeat the enemies.

In Splatoon for example, even if they own your team, you can still pull off a miraculous victory if you just happen to paint the most, in Foamstars, the focus does appear to be on the actual beating of enemies. You can also rescue your own teammates before they are permanently taken down, which admittedly is both frustrating as an attacker but awesome as a defender.

But in the end, the game has some issues that I think destroy the fun. For starters, the tutorial is very basic and I do feel like you should have more training on the shooting side. Not just aiming, but mostly the weird fucked up speeds some of these weapons have and I mean that they are excruciatingly slow at times. There is this one weapon that seems to only shoot once a second and in battle… Not very useful.

Now not all is bad in this game, despite the constant mentioning of Splatoon, it is in itself its own game. That is also where it stands, a game that in my humble opinion has a spot in the gaming world, heck, even Fortnite with all its cheaters still exists years later, but only time will tell if Foamstars will succeed in surviving in the long run. They may want to do something about the expensive DLC though, that is daylight robbery if you saw some of those prices…

In conclusion, Foamstars is mostly a poppy and pretty game and if you can get used to its quirks, you may even end up enjoying it, though it is no Splatoon, that is for sure.
