Review: Persona 5 Tactica

Welcome to our review of Persona 5 Tactica, where our favorite franchise Persona ventures off into the tactical RPG genre!

After a strange incident, the Phantom Thieves wander into a bizarre realm where its citizens are living under tyrannical oppression. Surrounded by a military group named Legionnaires, they find themselves in grave danger until a mysterious revolutionary named Erina rescues them and offers an enticing deal in exchange for their help. What truth lies behind Erina and the deal she offers to the Phantom Thieves?

Persona 5 Tactica features an all-new story, the return of fan-favorite characters, and brand-new allies and foes. Join the group as they lead an emotional revolution in this thrilling combat adventure!

Lead an uprising of the heart in a brand-new storyline that takes place in Persona’s iconic universe. Assemble a team of beloved heroes to fight oppressive armies in thrilling turn-based combat. Overthrow your enemies with powerful Personas, an assortment of weapons, and wipe them out with style!

First off, let us start with the obvious, this is a tactical RPG, so think Mario Rabbids games or Xcom. Atlus really knows what they are doing, so I won’t go deep into actual gameplay, it is all about using your best brain spasms to find a way through the battle and then to keep advancing the storyline.

In itself, the tactical side is just another one in the genre, while nothing special, it does come close in the fun provided by for example the Disgaea games or Mario Rabbids. I don’t want to sound like I am ignoring the fighting here, it is just what this genre has become. A great addition but not really a brand new approach to the genre? Nothing wrong with that, fans of both Persona (or Shin Megami Tensei) and this genre will truly enjoy themselves.

What really shines for a game like this, is how the story is being woven into the game. Well, Persona 5 Tactica is all about your battle with the ultimate nightmare bride, not even talking about a ghetto bride (read that in Eric Cartman voice) or an all-out bridezilla, no, Marie is the ultimate nightmare, she puts everyone she enchants to do her bidding. From the start, she obviously enchants all your friends and you, being Joker in the game, can escape thanks to a new friend.

What I really like, is how over the top they made Marie. Heck, during her introduction, which is already right after the tutorial part, she emprisons Joker and drags him and Morgana behind her vehicle, I would say some sort of special limousine, but overall just a massively impressive atmosphere is being created.

And that is just what Atlus does best, especially in other Persona games, they are games that just drag you into things. And while this may be not for everyone, I mean, tactical RPGs will always be a niche section of the RPG genre, I do think this one might be a great introduction, this and Mario Rabbids, those 2 are just about perfect.

In conclusion, Persona 5 Tactica does not disappoint and while it is not a true mainline game, it sure is entertaining, and that Marie, she sounds like a peach!
