Review: Nacon Revolution 5 Pro controller

Nacon is back with a new pro controller for the PlayStation 5. The Nacon Revolution 5 is the newest member of the pro line and promises to be the best controller for PlayStation 5 fans. It’s not the cheapest controller on the market but is it worth the extra buck? Let’s find out!

Out of the box

The Nacon Revolution 5 Pro controller is marketed at gamers who take playing games seriously, especially during tournaments. It’s one of the controllers that enable you to map your input to the standard and extra buttons so you’re faster than your opponent. You certainly can use it as a more casual gamer too but its price of 240 bucks might hold you back. I’ve been playing my PlayStation 5 games with the controller for a week now and must admit that I am, once again, impressed with the quality of this new Nacon product. First, let’s start with the basics. The Revolution 5 is officially licensed which already gives you a nice guarantee of the quality. Being officially licensed the main competitor of the Revolution 5 is PlayStation’s own DualSense Edge controller. Since both are very similar in price, the Revolution 5 has big shoes to fill and I’m pretty sure potential buyers will expect a lot from the product.

The packaging is tight and due to the official license, it really feels like you’re buying a PlayStation product. The controller comes in a nice white and blue box where you’ll find a stylish black carrying case that holds your controller’s extra weights and action buttons. Underneath the controller, there’s room for the BlueTooth dongle and at the top of the case, there’s a small net to carry your USB-C cable and cleaning cloth so you always have everything you need in a compact yet stylish case.

Play the way you want

The power of the Nacon Pro controllers is the way you can alter the buttons and weight to fit your playstyle the most. Out of the box, the controller uses concave sticks but those can easily be switched out to convex sticks. Inside the small box with the controller’s accessories, you’ll find two pairs of convex sticks, a thicker and higher version and a thinner one that comes very close to the standard concave versions. The thicker ones are a great alternative for those who like playing with a more elevated thumb position. There are also a couple of rings that can help for more intense and responsive moments. Besides the changeable buttons, the little box also comes with different weights that you can use to make your controller heavier or lighter depending on your personal preferences. The best thing about all of those options is the fact that it’s all incredibly easy to change. It all just clicks and slides out and into place and in just a couple of minutes you’ll have the lay-out of your dreams. If you owned a previous Nacon Pro controller, you know what to expect but if you’re new to the Nacon line, you’ll be surprised with the ease.

The controller itself is very different from the DualSense controllers since it’s an asymmetrical controller, just like the Xbox controller. Personally speaking, this is a big plus for me, I prefer the Xbox controller over the DualSense so playing with the Revolution 5 Pro Controller really felt great. Of course, this is very personal and if you like symmetrical controllers more, you won’t enjoy this one at all. That being said, Nacon really thought of everything when it comes to comfort. The grip is tight and thanks to the texture you’ll never lose your grip even when you’re hands are sweaty. The triggers are bigger compared to the DualSense but that’s once again a benefit rather than a disadvantage. Thanks to the bulkier triggers, you’ll have a more natural grip and your hands rarely get tired of holding this controller. A very nice design that does the job! It’s also incredibly easy to access and use the extra triggers on the controller’s backside. There’s really a lot of freedom with the Nacon Revolution 5 Pro as it also comes with a powerful app to change and map your controls and save them as different preset profiles. By switching some buttons on the backside of the controller, you can switch between your preset preferences so you never lose much time after the initial set-up.

Conclusion:

The Revolution 4 Pro controller is a worthy competitor in its price range. It’s not a cheap controller but you’ll get a lot of amazing quality in return. If you’re looking for a more professional asymmetric controller for your PlayStation 5, this is definitely the best on the market.
