Sonic as a character is probably one of the top 5 most recognizable gaming characters out there and both Sonic and Mario are getting a new game this year, in the same week no less. The 2 kings of the genre of side-scrolling platformers no less and well, both games are amazing in their own way.
While one is a more technical game, the other is speed-based, and well, Sonic games have been very much a like it or love it, kind of games, and well, Sonic Superstars returns the franchise to its core, where the games where the best. Not joking, I mostly never picked up the Sonic games in the previous years because the 3D side of this franchise, was often not the best experience.
But Sega delivered with Sonic Superstars. Sega delivered big time, an amazing old-school feeling with some of the best graphics out there for a game of this genre. It just looks stunning and with the speeds involved, that is really high praise, mind you. I just loved dashing through worlds as fast as Sonic would let me.
Levels are still as glorious as the old-school Sonic levels and this entire game is basically just a love ballad to the genre. Complicated levels though easy to run through, boss fights with spunk, unexpected hits by enemies and unexpectedly flying through others. This game has it all. At times, I felt like I was 12 again when I was visiting friends who had a Sega at home and me being from a Nintendo home, things always were fun during those visits. With so many new games and so many Sonic hours played, the nostalgia hit is a big one.
I usually try to find a downside to games, just to be able to make the reviews more complete, but aside from maybe missing a small tutorial on the basic movements, like a minute’s worth of information, it would have gone a long way. It’s not like it takes a rocket scientist (pun intended) to figure it out, but it would help.
In conclusion, Sonic Superstars is the gold standard for modern 2D Sonic games!
