Preview: War Hospital – Gamescom 2023

I checked out the upcoming World War 1 RTS game War Hospital where you have to manage your war hospital and save a lot of soldiers. This is not about the epic battles but about the battles that are fought behind the scenes. Prepare for an RTS of epic proportions!

It all starts with the triage protocol

First things first, War Hospital is an extremely deep RTS where you’ll have to learn a lot of different mechanics in order to become successful. The first and most important thing you’ll need to master is the triage protocol. It’s up to you to decide the order of your patients and make difficult decisions when it’s needed. There are a lot of numbers that you’ll need to take into consideration. From survival chances to time spent in the hospital to more emotional decisions such as sending soldiers home or letting them die to make room for new patients. This game isn’t here to tell fairytales, it brings the true story of a war hospital and the moral dilemmas that came with it. Every patient has a little biography so you’re not only focussing on the number while making choices. This alone is a rather complex and deep mechanic but it goes way beyond just that.

It’s more than just you hospital

Managing the flow of patients is just one small portion of the game, it runs deeper. You’re able to upgrade and level your crew so they operate faster or have access to better tools. In order to do so, you’ll need resources, which won’t come easily in times of war. Managing and controlling the economy and rail station is crucial to get access to the tools you need. Besides that your healed soldiers will defend your little town in the trenches, you’ll be able to send scouts out on the battle fields to gain new troops and conquer important pieces of the map and you’ll need to give everyone a decent job to keep moral up. Losing the game happens when moral hits zero or when you don’t have enough troops to protect your facilities when the enemies attack. It’s a lot of gameplay mechanics that are simply too complex to fully grasp during a small thirty minutes gameplay session but it’s clear to say that this one is aimed at the RTS fans. If you’re up for a challenge and want to manage a couple of things all at once, it seems like this will definitely be the game for you. It also helps that it stays this true to history, giving it some added value.

Early conclusion:

War Hospital is shaping up to become the dream for RTS fans. It’s a deep RTS game with a lot of different gameplay mechanics to keep you entertained. Running a successful War Hospital isn’t that easy as you’ll learn along the way.
