Welcome to our short review of the Mortal Kombat 1 Pre-Order Beta, where we got access to a limited number of fighters, the Towers game and online play.
Out of all the major fighting games out there, I think very few speak to our imagination in such a way that captures our attention like Mortal Kombat. Probably one of the most known franchises outside the gaming industry and quite possibly the most popular in many arcades worldwide. I know I played this game myself in at least 4 countries in the past, though that is honestly not saying that much, I think I have easily spent weeks of my life in arcades and well, I love games like Mortal Kombat despite not being a real fighting game afficionado.
I can honestly say that while I own most games physically, I rarely pass the 10 hours of play per title, this goes for pretty much all the fighters out there, the sole exception from the past few years being the latest Jojo game, that just clicked with me the same was as this small demo did. I call it a demo, but in all honestly, its major downside is that so very little content was available really. The Towers game basically only served as a measuring tool for how I felt the game handled itself in other difficulty levels.
Having too little time on my hands, I was unable to deep dive in all 5 levels of difficulty and I mostly spent my time with the basic level and the easiest. A weird choice for most, but indulge me, I find that it is important to know how the basic entry level is to any game. I very often spend time at the easiest of modes, it just the best idea of how the developers intend to introduce new players to a game and well, with the cruel nature of MK in mind, this is really necessary. Imagine being completely new to the game series and getting an instant combo that literally destroys you?
Exactly, not your ideal case scenario and that is where the game shines so much, yes, easy is truly easy for the more advanced userbase, but just perfect to hone your skills and eventually level up. Skills you will be needing to perform the hundreds of combo moves and abuse them to your advantage.
Yes, I did enjoy this demo, but I just wish I had either all the players available or some of the Kampaign? All the demo did, was leave me with a sense of being unfulfilled, like I am still hungry after a great wagyu steak and now wondering what to eat? I am quite sure the full release will be highly rated, this is what was my initial impression from a small part being made available to me.
My biggest fear is that the game might be lost in the 2023 month of september with some of the biggest games of the year coming out, though I am sure Mortal Kombat 1 will not disappoint and the biggest advantage for the genre is that the game can literally be played anytime!
The best part is always the time you hear Fatality blast from your speakers…
