Time to dance! In this rhythm game, you follow Sprout on his quest to save the world through the vegetable country—time to hop, hop, hop, in.
Story Time!
Follow Sprout – the Chosen Onion – on his lightweight, self-aware adventure between music levels. Make funny dialogue interactions full of silly jokes and pop culture references. Help the adorable inhabitants of the Vegetable Kingdom and face a charming cast of Sweet Villains. It’s like Keanu turned himself into an onion.
Jokes aside are Rhythm Sprout a great take on the whole rhythm concept. You have games like Osu/Elite Beat Agents that made music with on-screen actions, we have Dance Dance Revolution, and we have Just Dance. Combine all these elements into an action-packed rhythm game with the tabs from Guitar Hero!
Gameplay
The main gameplay element of Rhythm Sprout is a fast-paced rhythm action with original music and a wacky story mode. To beat the game, you have to both step to the rhythm, progress, and fight to the beat to defeat the monsters you face. Every music track goes together with a unique and detailed 3D environment designed around its theme and story beat. Also, keep an eye out for little events and easter eggs throughout the levels, which reference many pop-cultural elements that make the levels highly replayable since you often miss quite a bit when hopping around.
Aside from difficulty modes and high-score achievements, there are several modifiers to ramp up the challenge and replay value.
Mix different level modifiers to get unique results:
- Speed up any song with the Turbo Mode
- Refresh your muscle memory using the Mirror Mode
- Shuffle the notes to get a unique beat map – and share it with friends to challenge them!
- Or wing it entirely with the always-changing Totally Random Mode.
Bugs?
Remember, though, that the game is not yet optimized for both controllers (I tested it with an Xbox Series S) or the Steam Deck. So play this one on the PC or laptop of your choice to be safe. Or I did do something wrong. Let me know if that’s the case!
Early Conclusion
Rhythm Sprout fits perfectly in its genre, and I’m curious to see how the final product will play. The elements of battling and jumping on the beat are not new, but how Rhythm Sprout incorporates this into the gameplay can give Necrodancer a dance for their money.
