The time has almost come to experience the battle with Lilith yourselves. Marvel’s Midnight Suns s’ release is just around the corner and I got the chance to play an early build of the game. Here are my first impressions of 2K’s Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Let’s go!
Without spoiling too much about the story… The Midnight Suns are an organization led by a Legendary hero with a mysterious past that will have to combine their supernatural strengths with each other to go against Lilith, the Mother of Demons. Lilith will also have a vicious team herself that will tackle your team down as much as possible because she’s up to no good.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG like XCOM but set in the Marvel Universe. You take on the role of a legendary demon slayer that will have to lead other superheroes into the fray. These superheroes come with a package of powerful abilities that will help you overcome anyone that stands in your way.
“Battles go by very fast, especially when you’re performing the right actions at the right time.”
The gameplay mechanics are fairly simple. The game itself is turn-based, so in other words, you’ll have to perform a limited amount of actions before the enemy team gets to do their thing. You’ll have to manage the positions and actions of a certain amount of skilled heroes and take everything in the environment into account. Each round, you’re permitted to do a certain amount of actions: you can reposition your ally on the battlefield, perform 3 hero-related super moves in the form of action cards and even redraw a certain amount of action cards. After that, you’ll have to let the enemy team do their thing and await the results.
The game is fast-paced, tactical, and also intuitive. Battles go by very fast, especially when you’re performing the right actions at the right time. You can perform single-skill actions that do loads of damage or perform abilities that’ll let your hero jump from one enemy to another. By performing actions, you’ll build up superhero energy that can be spent on ultimate skill cards: a hero’s strongest signature move. You’ll also have to keep awareness of your surroundings because certain elements can influence the battlefield. An area can have explosive barrels or even containers you can launch toward your enemy. Keep in mind that these elements are available to anyone, so even the enemy team.
“…this game has the same vibes as a Marvel movie!”
After the battles, you can gather your mission loot and go back to your hideout where you can get some grip on the situation that’s at hand. You’ll be able to upgrade your skillset into more powerful abilities, you can hang around with your team members and get to know them, you can spend some fashion coin on a new piece that can be added to your wardrobe, forge new equipment… etc. In other words, the game offers more than just your standard tactical gameplay and I truly love it.
Until now, I haven’t had a dull moment during my first playthrough. The game takes its time to learn you the basics, introduce you to the features of the hideout, get to know your team members, and build a bond with them, … I also would like to point out that this game has the same vibes as a Marvel movie. It has fast-paced storytelling with many impactful moments, multiple action scenes, and of course great humor to tie all pieces together. The game looks great and runs very stable.
I’m still in the early stages of the game and I do want to tell more about what I’ve seen and experienced. However, it’s too early to get that final score hammered in stone and I feel that the game isn’t done talking. I’m taking it all in and letting myself experience the game as best as I can. Even though I cannot say a lot, I can say a couple of things that do matter: the game’s a blast and I can’t wait to give you my final verdict.
