I will admit to owning the previous games but never really playing them as the chaos in the games is something I struggle with. In this aspect, you can call me autistic and I will not even consider it negative, I have always been like this and I do shy away from chaos in games. The multiplicity of genres on top of the main action/hack’n slash, it can be overwhelming if you are new to this franchise and I will admit to having my issues with how quickly you switch from one side of the chaos to the next.
From old skool fighting you switch to modern hack’n slash to some sort of RPG where you drive a Akira-esque bike. The amount of weirdness is actually completely natural for the Suda51 games, much like how we call the “Souls” games their own genre, maybe we should start calling the Suda51 games a genre as well?
Now, aside from the chaos, there was one thing that was kind of weird, whenever you got some sort of tutorial screen or one of those “press button X” screens, the overlays were incredibly low quality, especially on my 4K, they kind of threw me off my game. Maybe it is all just part of the total chaos in this game. I mean really, you are fighting aliens on some sort of galactic ranking. At least you are still doing the “taking a du… toilet visit” to do the saving, right?
No More Heroes 3 is a weird game, it really is. When you are not playing, you are being treated to over the top cutscenes in pure anime style, all just fitting into the chaos that is this game. Is it for everyone? Most definitely not. Heck, I am still not sure I even like the game in its whole, but I do like the main fighting that we do in it. The hack’n slash part, it is really good!
In conclusion, No More Heroes 3 is a perfect example of a game that is a niche genre in itself. Chaotic for me, amazing for you and disturbingly disappointing for the next guy. I would say “next time you are on the toilet, look up some gameplay to see how well you would like it!”
