Hands-on: Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova – Gamescom 2022

Happy Star Trek Day! To celebrate, let’s talk about the upcoming Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova, a game I was lucky enough to test and play during Gamescom 2022.

A Star Trek celebration

Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated television series that’s receiving its own game next month. I was able to test this game during Gamescom 2022 and played it in co-op. First things first, the game takes the iconic Star Trek characters from the animated series and stays true to their appearance and voice. If you’re a fan of the television series, you’ll feel right at home in this upcoming game. It’s clearly aimed at a younger audience but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to explore for the more veteran player.

If you’re a fan of the Star Trek universe, you’ll be pleased to know that a lot of the hidden objects and unlockables refer to some iconic Star Trek moments. From special weapons to iconic ships, it’s all there and it’s a blast to explore together. This is the perfect game to pass down your love for the iconic franchise to your children for example. While you’re helping them get through the levels, you can teach them everything there is to know about the franchise. Thanks to this game, the Star Trek fandom will be past down from one generation to another, as a true Star Trek celebration.

Fun gameplay

But what about the actual gameplay? Well, it’s a third-person action game that doesn’t forget to insert some puzzles to keep things fresh and fun. In my gameplay, I had the opportunity to check out some of the different weapons and attack my enemies. Most of the times, I had to defeat several enemies before I could move on, following a rather traditional approach gameplay-wise although young players won’t mind this at all. Taking down the enemies is fun and thanks to your different attacks, you keep the combat fresh and entertaining. But this game offers more than just combat.

In between combat, I had to solve some puzzles together with my co-op buddy. These puzzles resolved around special cubes, able to transfer electricity. By placing them on the right spot, I could open certain areas or activate specific bridges. Working together as a team in order to solve these problems was crucial, elevating the co-op approach. Don’t expect the puzzles to be extremely hard or challenging, it’s all in line for the younger audience but you can certainly compare them to similar puzzles in the LEGO franchise.

Early conclusion:

Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is shaping up to become another fun addition to the game library of a young gamer. If you’re a fan of the Star Trek franchise, there certainly is a lot to discover and you love all the added lore and accuracy of the collectibles. Be sure to add this to your list.
