Welcome to this weird article where I explain how my own personal backlog works and why you should do things this way too!
So we all know what dangers come from a backlog, it is mostly a mile-long list of games you want to eventually get to. I mean I had it this way too, in my head, pretty much about as unorganized as can be. Often thinking I should go back to certain games after quitting them prematurely or due to lack of time.
In my personal case, it does not help that I physically own 4000 games, only adding to the chaos. But regardless of how big a collection or how small it may be, I can only urge everyone that wants to truly keep a backlog is to organize by making a silly list. Seriously, it did wonders for me.
Now I will confess to one thing, I almost never completely ignore a game due to time issues or initially idling out on it, I put them at the bottom of my backlog list and I give them a second try when their time is up. If I really do not enjoy it the second time around, that is when I drop it from my list.
So why do I bother with games this way?
Appetites change and so do your likes and dislikes, as simple as that. I recently experienced that once again. Dishonored being the culprit. My first attempt at the game, around 3 years ago, call it a culmination of circumstances but I bummed out on the second level/chapter of the game. As much as I loved being Corvo, the assassin, I was just bummed out by the difficulty of the second level.
3 years later, a new mindset completely, Dishonored was finished in 3 days, followed by the second game and as I am writing this, the final chapter of the third game is awaiting me. What was once a game I dropped, has now become a game series that I am in love with. A solid 9 is what I would score it.
And this is not the first time that it has happened to me, opinions/flavors/mindsets/… They all change over time and my advice is really to write down your backlog, making sure you do not miss a single game. I am having way more fun discovering or rediscovering games.
Once I finish my game, my backlog is telling me to go play Prey, then it is Division 1 and after that, I will be playing Alice Madness Returns. I just love how having done the work 1 time in my life to actually build this list, is now making things easy on me. Sure, I often move certain games up the chain, but most of the time, I keep to it. It just works out for me and I feel you would benefit from it too!
On a side note, I also put my DLC on the backlog so I do not end up forgetting all about it, I recently finished the Marvel Avengers DLC Packs, additions I would probably have ignored due to lack of interest. They were better than I expected and I even wrote a full article on them. It all just makes my life easier.
