Review: Pinball Freedom

Grab your walkman, and take a trip to your favorite arcade with our classic retro Pinball machines. Go Back to the Future with our Sci-fi table or indulge in a tale as old as time with our Fairytale themed machine. With our first-person, single-player simulation, you’re encouraged to channel your inner 90s kid as you compete to make it to the top of the leaderboard. Then, with five uniquely-themed different tables, get in on the action! Let’s play ball! (Oh, sorry, wrong sport).

Pinball Freedom

Pinball Freedom is one of those games that’s either a hit or miss with the person playing it. It was a miss for me. I love pinball, and I played a lot of 3D Pinball Space Cadet while growing up. So when a pinball game comes across our inbox, I’m always up for it. Sadly, the installment of Pinball Freedom couldn’t get me excited and made me yearn for Kirby’s Pinball Land & Pokemon Pinball. Since all the games I listed are pretty old, it’s usually not good.

Pinball Lockdown

To make it worse, Pinball Freedom is the second installment/sequel to CGA Studio’s first Pinball game, Pinball Lockdown, which was released on Steam 17th April 2020 – but is still not out of early access for some reason..? It was marketed as a unique, exciting collection of pinball tables with various themes. No hidden extras; 5 tables are available from day one. Discover thrilling tables with challenges and missions, including dragons, outer space, casinos, and a wonderland.

They feature a table based on Onteca’s hit retro game Space Ribbon and a classic Alice in Wonderland Table with original illustrations.

Tables:
. Las Vegas
. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
. Dragon Land
. Space Ribbon
. Zen Garden

The newest additions in the second installment are in the same ‘genre’ and range from Sci-fi, Fairytale, BMX, Skate, and Chill Panda, plus an air hockey machine! However, the air hockey machine plays a melancholy tune when you score and a happy theme when the CPU scores.

Conclusion

So, to conclude – graphical and gameplay-wise, Freedom Pinball fails on many levels. There aren’t many good pinball games, so I hoped this would be a gamechanger. Sadly it’s not. Let’s hope a third installment will bring more balls to the table.

5/10

Tested on the Nintendo Switch.
