Review: Razer Barracuda X headset

It’s time to review another one of Razer’s headsets. The Barracuda X is unlike anything you’ve seen before since you can use it on several devices without any trouble. A USB-C dongle to rule them all? Let’s find out!

Out of the box

As always, I like to start my review with the first impression of the headset itself. Razer was kind enough to send me the Mercury version and this came in a gorgeously created silver/white box. Inside I found the Barracuda X and was welcomed by its surprisingly non-gaming look. A lot of gaming headsets on the market often share a rather similar gaming look, often accompanied by some RGB lights and big logos to make sure you stand out during one of your streams. The Barracuda X does things a bit differently and comes with a rather modern, slick design that reminded me of the better mainstream headsets currently on the market. The Barracuda has a compact lightweight design that feels right at home in 2022. It’s not your typical gaming headset, instead, it’s a modern and smooth design. I absolutely loved it the moment I got it out of the box but its performance and 4-in-one approach made it even better!

One dongle to rule them all

Although the design by itself is pretty impressive, I was most impressed by the 4-in-one ability of this headset. The special thing about this headset is that it’s not your standard Bluetooth headset. Instead, it works with a wireless USB-C Dongle which you can plug into the device of your choice. No extra steps or installation is needed. Insert the dongle, pair your headset and you’re ready to go. You can easily switch your headset between PC, Android, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch without the hassle of continuously changing your Bluetooth settings. It’s perhaps a bit of a letdown that Xbox owners are left out in the cold but if you own at least two of the devices listed here, this headset is certainly worth every penny. Although the connectivity is a premium service, in my opinion, this is a mid-tier headset when it comes to its price. For 99, this one can be yours and it’s really a no-brainer for that low price.

But how can you connect USB-C if your device doesn’t support it? Well, Razer thought about everything and added a USB-A to USB-C adapter so you can plug it into ‘regular’ USB ports, handy if you’re using it on PlayStation 4 or even the Nintendo Switch dock. It’s all just extremely easy to understand and in no time, you’re ready to enjoy the impressively solid sound. The Barracuda X really sounds good and is able to offer deep basses and higher tones all at once. Of course, it’s not as impressive as premium-tier headsets but for its price, it’s definitely one of the better ones currently on the market. To make the party even better, it comes with an attachable microphone for your online sessions. The microphone simply delivers too, nothing too special, but it works as it should work.

The dongle got you covered if you want to use this headset wirelessly, as intended, but even without the dongle, you can still use the 3.5mm audio combo cable for wired use with any device with a 3.5mm audio jack. That’s right if you count this option too, this headset is a true beast of variation as it supports a crazy amount of devices.

Conclusion:

The Barracuda X headset is an impressive headset for a rather low price. Thanks to the dongle, you can enjoy your headset on the device of your choice. It truly delivers everything you would expect and even more. Thanks to its slick and modern design, it’s a true blessing to use and I’m pretty sure this one might become your favorite new headset in no time.
