Backlog Review: Heavy Rain

Welcome to our review of this PlayStation 3 title that I recently played, a game also recently available on PS Plus and a recommended title to play too!

Experience a gripping psychological thriller filled with innumerable twists and turns. The hunt is on for a murderer known only as the Origami Killer. Four characters, each following their own leads, must take part in a desperate attempt to prevent the killer from claiming a new victim.

You need to think fast and act even faster, as every choice and move you make can result in dramatic, game-changing consequences – and even determine who lives… and who dies. How this story ends is entirely up to you.

In all honesty, I only started playing the game to suck up to a female gaming friend. Never really expected a lot because this game is quite far out of my usual comfort zone. I had the game in my collection so I figured why not have something else to talk about with her. Spoiler alert, I was pleasantly amused though I still hate the game mechanics.

In short, I purposely decided to let everyone die during combat. All possible characters did not survive on purpose. I had this idea in my head to tank all the fights and see if there would really be a negative ending and to my delight, there was a most dark ending. The story is really worth your time even if you decided to let everyone die.

As soon as I started playing, I knew I was playing a more than decent story and thanks to clips on Youtube, I know the “good” ending too, but I will leave this decision to you to pick your battles. My battle with this game was mostly with the game mechanics itself.

I am out of my comfort zone when I play narrative games that rely on button presses to advance. I prefer more of a hands on approach, but I must admit here too that I did enjoy the game, despite often not getting proper feedback from the controller. Especially struggling with the motion controller input.

And even though  they were never hard to do, swipe right, shake up and down, move downwards, … They more often than not decided not to register and leading to more than a few frustrations. The biggest one being in the end game phase, where the boys were playing in the construction site. I messed that one up so many times, I was more annoyed than looking at the story.

Another thing that deserves mentioning, I always took my decisions based upon what I would chose in real life. If you want my ending, please follow this advice and take the cowards way out in most choices. The majority of them are really harsh and keep in mind, this is all just one big mindfuck in the end 🙂

In conclusion, Heavy Rain got remastered for the PS4 and I have to say that it looks quite good on the new PS5. Just wish there was some sort of easier way to play this game. Those mechanics prevented me from giving it a 9/10. The game did make me order another one of the same game studios, so there is that too….

8,5/10
