Welcome to our review of Tribes of Midgard, a promising game that brings you either joy or a ton of headaches.
Fight, craft, and stand together against the onslaught of Ragnarök. Tribes of Midgard is a new game in which players must resist the oncoming invasion of Giants during Ragnarök. Set in worlds full of dark creatures, hidden gods and abundant materials to be uncovered, you play as a Viking living in a village that houses the Seed of Yggdrasil; the last bastion that protects the Gods from the other Realms.
Explore the wilderness to craft new weapons and be prepared to defend the sacred center of your village from the grim shadows from Helheim that prey upon its power. All the while, giants stalk ever closer to the village, seeking to destroy Midgard and fulfill the prophecy of the end of the world.
Deep down, I think this game is decent enough to give it due credit, but I refuse to do so. My entire gameplay of this game has been nothing more than a pure headache. It is lacking some serious polish around the edges and for crying out loud, get rid of those disgusting microtransactions.
First, this is a gathering of resources till you drop-kinda game, where the actual gathering is not the smoothest. I once had similar experiences on an Atelier game and I just dislike how the animations are forced upon you every time, is it that hard to introduce some sort of automated pickup when you pass something?
Secondly, I get the entire part of reviving naked, but this is where the game becomes a nuisance, you either opt for micro transgressions (see what I did there?) or you just annoy yourself to death by constantly harvesting random shizzle ’round the base camp. Needless to say, this entire game is built around making you spend more money and I would be chill with it if it were free-to-play, but guess what, it ain’t….
Third, those battles. What are those about? I finally had a decent hammer in my inventory for attacking. It dealt a lot of damage even, but it got “out of commission” really early, having to repair it a few times before deciding to just ignore it.
Fourth, the gathering of souls, same as the gathering of resources, this is thankfully at the same time, but how many souls do you need for some items, damn. I found a farm in my second world (read second try at the game as you restart from scratch) and I would have to pay a lot of resources to rebuild it. I was not even bothering getting that many souls, because I may be wrong here, but if you do not feed the souls to the Yggdrasil root, it dies and that is yet another GAME OVER.
Talking about game overs, fifth, I got a game over with a perfectly healthy Yggdrasil and no enemies inside my camp. I know cause I was effing healing myself right next to the Yggdrasil when this happened. Another 2-hour gameplay down the drain and with that, also my desire to keep playing.
I had a more than toxic gameplay experience with this “game” in its current form and I can only recommend against its purchase. I dislike doing this, but seriously, if you are into masochism and like to hurt yourself or if you can always play in a group, stay away from this game, also microtransactions in paid games aren’t really done anymore.
In conclusion, the game is a bust for me, I am rating it at barely a 5 with everything that annoyed me, but due to the microtransactions, I am putting it at a mere 4/10. I just can not give it anything more, I felt I was wasting my time playing it most of the time.
