Review: Button City

Welcome to our review of Button City, a game that is surprisingly cute, has a great story and sadly suffers from a few minor annoyances.

Fennel is a shy little fox who just moved into town. After discovering the local arcade, he makes new friends and gets swept up in a whirlwind adventure to save it from being shut down at the paws of greedy fat cat Peppermint Pepperbottom!

utton City is a colorful low poly narrative adventure game about friendship and community. Enter a pastel diorama world inspired by 90’s nostalgia and filled with cute characters to befriend. Complete quirky quests around town, play arcade games, collect fun costumes, solve puzzles, and more as you follow a story about growing up and saving the things that are important to you.

Button City is a game where you have to outweigh the good versus the bad. Do you prefer the storytelling side of games? Then this game will treat you so well, you may end up replaying it right away. I just love the story in this game and well, in the first hour of playing, you are meeting friends, almost get ripped off, and form a team to become the best gobabot players of Button City.

If you like the ingenuity of the game mechanics, you are in for a surprise. You are thrown from 1 side of town to the next like any other game, but Button City treats things differently. You basically zoom from 1 platform to the next, that is the smart part of this game, being able to turn them 360 degrees to quickly see what is happening, that is also a very big advantage.

Sadly there are also some caveats when playing the game. If you do not look right at the person you want to talk to, the game has this little dance where the character moves into place. Very cute, it really is, but it gets a little annoying after seeing it happen more often than not.

Another small annoyance I had, during the game, you can pick up trash, but that is also a slow responder. I wanted to do the right thing each time, but after 20+ cans, again this feeling of annoyance came about. I know I sound petty, but it really got on my nerves after so many times, especially because that game rocks in the story part.

I just have to end my review by saying the story takes first place in 85% of the time. So I am also making that my indication for my score. I think the story rocks and they do outweigh the minor annoyances for me personally. If they were smoothed over in the future, this game will be a more than solid 9 out of 10 score, but for now…

In conclusion, a more than decent 8,5 sore for a game that shines despite the annoyances!
