Review: Ys IX: Monstrum Nox (Switch)

Welcome to our review of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox or should we say our second playthrough of a game but this time on Nintendo Switch

Unsheathe your curse and smite the darkness.
Adol Christin is cursed by a mysterious woman and becomes a Monstrum, a powerful being who can exorcise monsters. To escape from the city of Balduq, he must ally with five other Monstrums, each with their own unique Gifts, and stop the Grimwald Nox, a shadowy dimension on the verge of overflowing into the real world.

So I already played this game before on PlayStation and now we went the Nintendo Switch route. This is more of a comparison review rather than a content-oriented one. I really loved the game the first time around and as the content did not change, I can not really say anything negative happened. Nor positive for that matter, the story is too recent to say it aged well or not, that is really what it is like.

So what is it like on Switch? Well, there are two sides to my explanation, first let me begin by breaking down things, which you can take literally. It is not the best… I have to bring an age-old argument to the table and say this simply by saying that you can not go racing in a Fiat Panda. A great car, I loved my own when I was driving one, but it is no powerhouse and neither is the Nintendo Switch, talk about kicking in an open door, right?

While there is no issue with the story, the graphics are painfully showing the lack of pure power of the console. I seem to have had very choppy action and lack of a proper frame rate. The contrast with my recollections of the gameplay on PlayStation is big. So big that I actually considered restarting the game on PS as well.

Despite being such a good game, it is hard to recommend buying it when you know there is a much better, much smoother version out there. So my recommendation is actually an easy one. Do buy this game as it is one of the better ones in its genre, I simply love the game and the intrigues in the story. But buy it on PlayStation when you have one and keep the Switch as a backup.

Sure, you should buy it if the Switch is your only console or you want to take the game on the go. But in any other option, just go for the game on the other platform, it is just the better version.

In conclusion, go buy this game, it is great!
