Review: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity DLC

Welcome to our review of Hyrule Warriors DLC, where we look at the new content for the Zelda musou game out on Nintendo Switch!

The Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass kicks off in June with an expanded roster, newly added weapon types, and challenging enemies. Stop by the Royal Ancient Tech Lab to test yourself with new challenges to unlock weapons and new helpful features! Then, dominate the battlefield as the new playable Battle-Tested Guardian or try out the added weapon types—the Flail for Link and Master Cycle for Zelda. These new combat styles will come in handy in the new Apocalyptic difficulty and against added enemies like the bomb-throwing Moblin and a Giant Chuchu.

When I originally played the game to death, I had to stop due to pain in my hands from all the combinations and attacks. I had over 50 hours invested in the game in under a week’s time. I just love this genre and I will gladly suffer the pain it sometimes brings. I never really went back into the game as I felt the remaining missions never really appealed to me. How to say this… I was not drawn into the mindless finishing of missions just to catch some rewards from them.

Fast forward to a few days ago, when I got the Season Pass and the accompanying new content. It was in a way more of the same. But… Differently?

They introduced some sort of skill tree that brings more advantages, which in turn will make some very hard missions a lot more doable. I am looking at those high-level missions when I say this. I hate the ones where you have to fight fast enemies while being forced to use a slower slugger. You know what I am talking about when you reached this point and if you have not, be prepared to really get all possible power-ups handy to tackle some levels, haha.

What I did like, is how they seemed to really give the grinding more of a meaning, which is a truly difficult task in games of the musou genre. Even in my favorite games, this aspect is often absent and I will almost never go for “gold” or three stars, just because I can not be bothered much to really keep pounding those buttons. Age of Calamity however got me back in the game to invest another 5 hours just on my first day. Trying to figure out this skill tree and grinding to free up the next piece.

In itself, this DLC is more of the same, which is not a bad thing if you are looking for more content. More missions, gear, and so on. The season pass was given to us for review and to be honest, now that I played it, I would actually purchase it. I enjoyed it more than I expected and now if you will excuse me, I need to go beat 3 more Lynels…

In conclusion, if you liked the base game, buy this expansion pack already!
