Review: Moving Out – Movers in paradise (DLC)

Moving out – the moving simulator by DevMGames and SMG studio – came out last year to much appraise. However, one of the most heard complaints was that it was a bit on the short side. Luckily this year’s DLC named “Movers in paradise” is here to solve that issue.

A small recap

for anyone unfamiliar with the original game, here’s a small recap. Moving out is a co-op party game in which your goal is to move stuff into the moving truck as fast as possible. Working together with your fellow movers is the key to success. The locations start out as normal homes but tend to ramp up into whacky environments with a multitude of hazards to avoid. The game takes some liberties when it comes down to customer care. The aim is to get the appointed objects in the truck. Everything else is fair game. If you happen to destroy windows, unhinge doors, and demolish glass cabinets along the way, the game doesn’t penalize you for it. It might even aid you in getting the job done faster. What ensues is an awesome time with friends and/or family yelling orders back and forth.

Packmore island

The movers in paradise DLC introduces a whole new island to the world of Moving Out. At the bottom of the starters area, you’ll find a boat waiting to board. The boat takes you to Packmore Island for what seems to be an easy-going well deserved vacation after hauling all that furniture. Once you arrive you’ll quickly figure out you’ve been tricked into working again. Soon after you’ll discover a treasure is buried on Packmore island and the only way to reach the treasure is by doing some moving. If you’ve been playing Moving before, chances are, you already completed the game. Therefore, the DLC starts out with a quick refresher of all the basic moves before sending you out on the island.

This refresher comes in handy because the movers in paradise DLC doesn’t hold back at all. The difficulty ramps up quite fast with the introduction of different tropical-island-themed hazards. I re-played the base game before attempting the DLC and was glad I did. Although it is possible to jump right into the DLC from the start of a new game, I would highly recommend not doing this. Take your time in familiarizing the mechanics through the base game campaign first. You don’t need to complete all of the original 30 levels but getting through a bunch of them will surely help you ease in the DLC.

Stupid wildlife

The tropical island theme is not purely a visual thing. The DLC introduces a whole bunch of new island-themed hazards to complicate things. Rubber boats to jump on, water geysers to propel you and the furniture, and ziplines amongst other things, all offer new ways of traversing the area. Finding the optimal use for these will surely cut down on your time. The wildlife in Packmore seems to have a grudge on you because almost each of these is out to stand in your way of completing your task. Especially the crabs. These are the worst of the worst. They have nothing better to do besides picking up boxes and hoarding them as far as possible from your moving truck. Even when you are carrying a box they have the guts to grab you and make you lose precious time.

Fully Packed

As mentioned before, Moving out had some room to improve on. The amount of content added with the movers in paradise DLC is awesome. With 24 new levels and extra arcade levels (special levels unlocked by completing challenges), the DLC almost adds an equal amount of content as the base game had. The moving in-upgrade is also included in the update which adds an extra mode to the game where you’ll need to unpack and put furniture back in the right place. With an additional 4 characters added, the movers in paradise DLC is packed to the brim with awesome content.

Conclusion

Anybody liking the base game should by now know that purchasing the DLC is a no-brainer. the extra content added to the game feels fresh and adds much more variety than ever before. Those new to the game but intrigued by it, shouldn’t doubt it anymore. Moving out + movers in paradise DLC is a great combo to have an awesome moving party.
