Review: Kill It With Fire

The spider – mankind’s most ancient and deadly nemesis. As a licensed Kill It With Fire exterminator, it’s time to fight back! Assemble your arsenal of increasingly excessive weapons, track spiders across suburbia, burn everything in your path and learn the truth about the spiders!

Objective-based spider hunting

Kill It With Fire feels like it’s a bit inspired by Untitled Goose game. You’ll start off in a house infested by spiders. Your clipboard holds the objectives you can complete to unlock more weapons and other things like skill/perk point to upgrade your character. The objective go from, kill 2 spiders with 1 shot, to more crazy/silly stuff like: Do the dishes or take out the trash. So you get why I drew similarities.

Killing spiders will unlock more areas/rooms within the current location you’re in. Kill enough spiders to proceed to a new location, getting more wild and outlandish the further you get into the game.

Besides this, there is also a side game mode/objective called: Battle in the Arachno-Gauntlet! Here you’ll have a limited time to kill a certain amount of spiders. There are spiders everywhere, HELP.

Arachnophobia

I have a phobia for spiders (arachnophobia) so this game creeps me out, but that is part of the fun. It is so crazy to be crept and scared out by finding spiders on the back of an object within a video game like this. I think it is caused by the fact that it’s relatable, together with the sound design. But this means it’s oh so satisfying to kill these nasty creatures and let out built-up anger against their kind.

These spiders are no regular spiders though. Up to 8 different spider species are roaming free in the game. For instance, spiderlings will hatch more tiny spiders when killed, while others might jump at you or even explode.  These spiders make you feel glad that real-life only has regular spiders.

The main appeal of the game is the weapons you’ll find within the house. Some can be found around the house, while others will be unlocked after completing the set objectives. You can basically kill the spider with whatever you can come up with, nothing is too crazy. But that doesn’t mean it’ll be easy, you’ve got to find these spiders first. With the help of a tracking device, the spiders can be easier found around the house.

Console or PC?

Although the Switch version is great, the game is better played on PC instead of consoles. This is because the PC gives you faster and smoother movements and reactions to what is happing, which relates better to how it feels in real life. The movements from the controller are too slow to keep track and kill the spiders precisely and effectively.

On the Switch, the performance is less as well which makes the game more choppy. These combined with the controls can make the game feel a bit frustrating to kill the spiders sometimes. But I guess this is also part of the experience that is relatable to real life as well. They are hard to kill and find when they run away. For those who are not sure if it’s a game for them, there is a free demo build of this game available on steam called: Kill It With Fire Ignition.

Conclusion

Kill It With Fire will creep you out and scare you with jump scares but will also make you laugh at how silly it gets. There are a lot of objectives to complete which will bring hours of fun. The gameplay is better designed for Keyboard and mouse, so If you have excess to a PC I would recommend getting it there. Keep in mind I’m reviewing the Switch version, the PC version gets a full point higher.

7/10
