When Deep Silver offered me the opportunity to test Gods Will Fall as part of the Deep Silver Creator Collective, I was ready to start my epic adventure. With a release schedule currently packed with big releases, it’s easy to overlook a game like Gods Will Fall and in all honesty, that would be a shame. This roguelite clearly takes inspiration from the big players in its genre but manages to create something new and unique at the same time. What started as an extremely hard quest to take down the gods, ended in one of my new favorite roguelite games. You better prepare to sink in those hours if you ever want to survive.
Start the revolution
In Gods Will Fall, you take control over a small group of people who got tired of the old ways. The gods of their land rule over humanity in torturous ways, always leaning on cruelty and suffering to get things done. Those who don’t obey the gods will die a slow and merciless death. Needless to say, those conditions are far from perfect and if you want to make something out of your life, you’ll need change. A brave band of warriors decides it’s time to start a revolution. Having suffered enough the clan of eight brave Celtic warriors rises to the occasion and sets off on the adventure of their lives. Will they make it out alive? Only time will tell!
At the start of the game, you’ll control all eight characters at once, running over the world map like little Pikmin, but Gods Will Fall is far from a cute garden puzzle game. In fact, don’t let its cute graphics deceive you, this isn’t an easy game at all. It often gets compared to Dark Souls and although the aesthetics of the visuals are entirely different, I certainly understand the comparison. Just like the Dark Souls games, you’re free to go where you want to go and challenge the gods in their dungeons. Don’t be sad if you picked the wrong dungeon and aren’t up for the challenge just yet. Inside these dungeons, you won’t be able to control all eight warriors at once, instead, only one can enter the dungeon and if you’re not careful, fall forever. To make it even harder, the game uses a permadeath system which means that if your character dies in the dungeon, it’s gone forever.
Master your warriors
Since you never really know what to expect on the other side of the entrance, you’ll often survive by trial and error. What makes this game so interesting is the fact that every individual warrior is a character on their own with its own strengths and weaknesses, often tracing back to its history with the gods your facing. Some warriors will be a lot stronger against certain gods and thus also stronger in the dungeons leading up towards the confrontation with the god. How do you know? By paying attention. You’ll often need to retrace your steps and alter your plan of attack if you want to clear the game. As said in the beginning, this is far from an easy game and if you want to take down the gods themselves, you’ll need to make a lot of sacrifices along the way. This is by far the game’s biggest success and downfall at the same time.
If you’re a fan of challenging games, this roguelite is certainly a dream coming true as it offers an entirely new take on the infamous genre and combines a lot of elements previously tested in other games. For fans of the genre, this is extremely refreshing and offers something entirely different. On the other side, it might all be a little too difficult for some, especially the lack of guidance can become rather frustrating. Although the first dungeon serves as a tutorial where you’ll learn and master the rules of the game, you’re entirely on your own after that. Exploring the lands and advancing from dungeon to dungeon isn’t set in stone. It’s up to you to find the right way of tackling your challenges and it’s up to you to get strong enough to survive the more challenging dungeons. If you don’t like to die a lot and if you don’t like to start over in order to finally advance, this game certainly won’t be your cup of tea, so keep that in mind before you jump in. If you’re up for a new type of challenge, however, this one might be one of the best and original games on the market.
Conclusion:
Gods Will Fall is a unique and challenging game that won’t be for everyone due to its lack of guidance and high level of difficulty. That being said, it is, however, one of the better ones in its genre. It’s by far one of the more original roguelite games and if you’re willing to invest some time with it, you’ll be able to survive this thrilling adventure. If you’re up for a challenge, this is a must-buy for sure!
