Indie Corner: Kick it, Bunny!

“Many stone figures were erected by ancient bunnies among the oases, but a disaster struck and all the figures were destroyed.

Your task, as a true bunny, is not only to find traces of the old bunny civilization, but also to restore their wonderful buildings.”

Open world doesn’t equal good game

I always laugh when a game that was clearly not made with a story in mind, tries to think of a story. I mean “the old bunny civilization”, what a joke. The title is also very creative… As the name would suggest you are a bunny and you eh… kick it. The goal is to kick blocks in the correct shapes to restore the figures. The game also markets itself as an “almost open-world”. I mean yes it’s a semi-open world. Does this mean it’s good and should be an open world at all? No! The open-world elements don’t add much. You walk from puzzle to puzzle with some useless thing to do along the way.

Bunny on Ice

A physics-based puzzler should have satisfying controls and puzzles that make you think and have twists to them to keep it interesting. Kick it, Bunny! fails on both of these departments. The puzzles are really basic. Just fit the pieces in the shape and you’re done. You can turn and move them, but your kick is so weak it takes so long to move the pieces in place. Besides this the blocks don’t have collision when turning so they will just straight up clip through the other blocks.

The controls are really bad. The kick has no impact at all. The bunny controls like it’s on ice or something. Besides this, it has one of the worst turning I have ever seen. If you spin the stick slowly your character will not complete the circle instead opting for going back in the same direction it came from. I mean how can you get something as easy as this wrong.

Xbox One X is not as powerful as you think

Besides this the game doesn’t even run smoothly on my Xbox One X. I guess my hardware is not good enough for its open world. Every time you complete a puzzle it just freezes. It is not caused by beautiful next-gen visuals but caused by bad game design. The visuals style of the game is really basic. Everything in the world feels plain and dead. When looking through all the games the developer, DillyFrame Games, have brought out I discovered a dark secret. They have developed a plethora of bunny games, each with almost the same assets and or gameplay.

Conclusion

Kick it, Bunny has no redeeming factors for existing. The game is badly designed; visually, gameplay and performance. You could say that the low pricing is a redeeming factor but I can’t imagine why you would rather spend the money on this than saving up your money to buy something worth while playing free to play games until that time comes.  I rate it a 1/10, which in my rating list means: Insult to god, seems fitting.
