I love this franchise and was honestly quite surprised to see it among the launch line up for the newest generation of consoles. Just a few years ago, almost feeling like just yesterday, I was buying the first game on Nintendo Switch and now I got it on Series X. While this is most definitely not the game to have the highest quality of graphics, it also does not need them!
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 actually gets its main appeal from its gameplay and while you can pretty much just read any review of the original Tetris and Puyo Puyo games to find out how this works, the only difference being that this is a game based on the competition of playing against one another. Place the blocks or blobs in the best and fastest way and you usually win. Though not always! There is so much depth in games like these… Getting combos or even just properly using the playing field to your advantage, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is the full package.
Now as I sure had a lot of fun, let me address something strange. How does this game compare to the separate games? Well, I need to confess liking Tetris over Puyo Puyo and that shows. I excel most in the Tetris battles and not in the Puyo ones, so I play a lot more of the original Tetris on my old skool game boy and on the newest iteration also available on the Series X. I tend to like the cross-platform play, but I do prefer a pure Tetris game.
Not dissing Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 at all here, the game is great and despite some awkward voice acting here and there, this is a great party game for lovers of the genre and well deserves the high praise I am giving!
In conclusion, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 is possibly the best game of its genre of the past few years and deserves all praise for a perfect marriage between 2 masterpieces.
