Review: GYLT

Welcome to our review of GYLT, a Google Stadia exclusive game about bullying!

Face your fears in GYLT, a haunting tale about bullying and childhood nightmares, as you help Sally navigate a creepy world to rescue her missing cousin Emily. GYLT is available only on Stadia!

The game starts off rather unusual, with a warning about bullying and it becomes clear quite quickly why this was included. You are playing a little girl in search of her cousin Emily and while you are hanging up the posters, you are suddenly haunted by the local bullies. Trying to run away, you get stuck without your bike due to crashing during your escape.

You head towards the cable car that can hopefully bring you back to town and out of the hands of the bullies. But on your way down the cable car, you hit some sort of invisible wall. Once you reach the end of the ride, the town has suddenly changed completely and there is not a single person in sight.

Before you know it, you try to find out what is going on in town and you are almost ambushed by monsters. It becomes clear that this is nothing like what can be labeled as normal and suddenly your character notices the missing cousin… Has she been hiding in school for the past month? Why? So many questions are at hand and you decide (obviously) to find her.

This is where the real game starts and the action meets adventure while also meeting puzzle games. There is so much to do in this game, from sneaking around to killing monsters to just solving basic puzzles. It is truly majestic in more than one way and I have to say, for a game that is exclusive on Google Stadia, this is a really great piece of entertainment.

My favorite part is how the game created this dark atmosphere and yet, it was still nothing too frightening. The story slowly evolves by finding these strange books that unveil parts of what happened, the mystery that surrounds the town, … There is a lot going on at the same time and quite a bit of item management.

From inhalers to replenish your health to batteries for your flashlight, needed for taking out monsters or basic defending against them. I loved sneaking up behind them for a big bang… There are birds, mysterious red stones, clay men, … Really so much we can do in GYLT.

Now while I did have a lot of fun with the game, there is the other side of things. I will always go into detail on my experience with Stadia itself. With the exception of the single bork, Stadia actually performed splendidly on my gameplay of GYLT.

Some technical background, I was playing on both my Chromecast Ultra on 4K as well as on my Asus laptop. Both times my upload and download speeds were very similar at 70Mbit download and 20ish up. I did purposely try to screw with my download speed for this game specifically to see if it would influence my experience and aside from lower visuals, I had no borks at all.

In conclusion, GYLT is possibly the best reason to start your Google Stadia experience. This is a fun game that will give you a great story and around 6 to 8 hours of fun. This is well worth the effort of signing up for the Stadia service!
