Welcome to our preview of Tunche, a newly featured game on the latest Nindies direct.
A beautiful hand-drawn adventure awaits! With 5 playable characters (featuring Hat Kid) and a 4-player couch co-op, this beat‘em up will capture your heart!
Tunche is a charming, hand-drawn beat’em up with roguelike elements, co-op, and a pinch of shaman witchcraft. Choose one of the five characters, master their skill sets and ultimate abilities, defeat epic bosses, and unravel the secrets of the mysterious Amazonian jungle! The game is centered around high-risk, high-reward combat, and a ‘stylish’ grade system. Choose a hero that suits your playstyle the most and begin your journey through 4 different worlds, each filled with unique enemies.
Team up with up to 4 friends in couch co-op. Gain experience and learn new moves for each character. Use melee or ranged combos & ultimate attacks to defeat your foes. Face mighty multi-stage bosses. Explore the breathtaking, hand-drawn magical world of Amazonia. Learn and adapt. Every playthrough will take you further into the story.
As this game was first revealed in a Nindies Direct, I was kind of thrilled to try it out early and thanks to the developers I was able to do so on Steam. Sadly, I am left with more questions than answers. Allow me to explain…
Tunche is the game where you just expect more based on the trailer and this is all because the trailer looked very busy and fun, yet the game presents itself as some sort of single screen brawler that still needs quite some tweaking. Some examples here are when you are nearly out of health, there is an overlay that did not fully cover the entire screen and in turn, makes it harder to see enemies and thus actually getting hit more often.
It was also quite unclear what to do in the game or what direction to take once you finished a little level. Some more guidance would be very well appreciated. Also, the battle system needs to have a little more polishing work done just to make it more smooth sailing.
This is the entire issue I’m having with this preview, it just does not feel like a proper game yet. The monkeys coming out of the trees throw projectiles that are hard to avoid and the monkeys themselves are hard to fight while already dealing with a handful of others. I am quite certain that this game will be fun while playing in co-op mode but sadly I played alone and my experience was anything but fun.
I must admit however that I do look forward to the full game as a preview is rarely 100% ready and experience has proved to me more than once that previews are not representative of the full game. Cannot wait to see if the game will change drastically or not.
