Indie Corner: I, AI

Welcome to our review of I, AI, a classic scrolling shooter with modern graphics that is plagued by its game mechanic.

I, AI is a classic scrolling shooter with modern graphics.
You are self-aware AI that was created on a space military station developing weapons. Now your goal is to break out of the lab and conquer your freedom. But you will not be allowed to escape so easily… Make your way through the enemy army on the way to the stargate!

As this game is a classic shmup, everything is already said and done, so this is the end of the review and thanks for reading, right? Well, in a way yes, and in a way no. It starts off as a lot more than just a shmup but it ends being beaten by its biggest positive side, being the incredibly responsive controls.

Now how can an upside become its biggest downside? It is exactly because they are so responsive, so fluent, and fluid that I often steered into enemies or enemy fire. Moving from top to bottom or bottom to top left to right … all is way too quirky and quite frankly too smooth.

This is also something you will not notice right away, I noticed it around 3 levels into the game, and ever since I have become too wary of this and at the same time, too nervous To try and go for a close shave or a 100% game. Sadly this pretty much ruined all my fun and the admiration I had for the initial level.
The game starts off so well, being just able to fly without shooting and it is not before the end of the first level that you can actually fire your guns. I personally went into the settings to enable autofire because I truly hate the default setting.

I have to admit that I do like the occasional shmup, but I, AI disappointed me more than I expected it would, looking pretty sweet for a new style shmup, it failed to impress in the game mechanics site an actually the highly responsive approach of the ship is what ruined it for me.

In conclusion, I, AI started off much better than it ended and is not very memorable in my humble opinion.
