Review: The Ramen Sensei

Guess who’s back, back again, it’s Kairosoft, ramen-time! Yes, another Kairosoft title, and we can’t get enough. It’s time to Build the ultimate bowl to leap past your ramen rivals and achieve greatness! Luckily I watched enough Naruto understand the basics of ramen, but I can’t say I’m a ramen-expert.

Yes, Kairosoft really geared up their game. Sure, the Nintendo Switch isn’t the console that features the latest Kairosoft titles, but the quality is increasingly getting better over the releases. This time you need to build your ramen rep by fashioning the ultimate bowl from a vast assortment of noodles, soup, and toppings. From roast pork to miso, mackerel, and more–the only limit is your imagination, meaning you’ll need to use your noodle to nail the right recipes and bring hungry customers in by the crowd!

The Ramen Sensei

For someone that eats ramen every other week (I’m looking at you hipsters of Europe), you probably know a lot of combinations I never imagined. Luckily it’s also just a means of ‘boerenverstand’ as we call it in the Netherlands. It roughly translates into just going with what feels natural. I made a lot of crazy combinations in my first run and even entered some contests to see how I sized up against rivals, thus cementing my standing as superlative sensei of the savory! Succeed–and one day you might even have your own ramen theme park!

Since I wanted to get to the top (which I always try to do in every Kairosoftgame I play), I joined to official Kairosoft Reddit, which is full of tips and tricks on how to become a full-fledged Ramen-master. By using some tips from the subreddit, I created full-fledged five star ramen, which blew the competition away by a longshot.

Complexity

To give some insight into how this game differs from Cafetarria Nippon for example (in complexity);

Compatibility comes in 4 levels, Icon - Best Compatibility (The Ramen Sensei).png Best, Icon - Good Compatibility (The Ramen Sensei).png Good, Icon - Normal Compatibility (The Ramen Sensei).png Normal, and Icon - Bad Compatibility (The Ramen Sensei).png Bad. Better compatibility will add more stat bonuses when making ramen. This table is a simple guide for people who want to make compatible ramen by themselves sorted by Icon - Shoyu Stat (The Ramen Sensei).png Shoyu, Icon - Miso Stat (The Ramen Sensei).png Miso, Icon - Tonko Stat (The Ramen Sensei).png Tonko, Icon - Salt Stat (The Ramen Sensei).png Salt (Shio). For the Moisture level, Dry represents all dryness levels from a bit dry to dryest. Likewise, Moist represents all moistness levels from a bit moist to moistest. Premade is the premade noodles that can be bought without needing to create it first. There are a total of 20 premade noodles, with a total of 63 combinations (not counting topics).

Conclusion:

Going through a few runs can easily suck up 10-20 hours, which are barely noticeable since Kairosoft titles are good for transmuting or passing time while sitting in quarantine (or watching the Presidential Election). What I love about the Kairosoft ‘genre’, is that you can challenge it any way you want. If you want to do a good run, you don’t need to dive to thickness or moisture; you can easily make Naruto-styled ramen and become a Ramen-Sensei; I just want to become the best Ramen-sensei there is (thanks Reddit!). But I think the fans of the food, this will be an even better title to play.

8/10

Tested on the Nintendo Switch.
