Now that both next-gen consoles have been released to the public, it’s time to talk about the available games. One of those new next-gen games is Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, which is so much more than a simple upgrade. Forget those straightforward remasters, this Special Edition brings so much more fun to the original game and is by far the best possible way to jump back in. It’s time to sharpen your blades and take down some demons!
Vergil is back
Like I said in the introduction, this Special Edition offers a lot more content than just its graphical upgrade. The biggest difference is the playability of fan-favorite Vergil, who’s finally back for good in Devil May Cry 5. Where you played as Dante, Nero, and V in the original release, you can play with Vergil from start to finish and this really alters the way you play the game. Vergil is an extremely fast-paced character and has a lot of impressive weapons in his arsenal. The Yamato is his main weapon and is basically an extremely sharp katana. Although this weapon doesn’t inflict that much damage and is only lethal at a shorter range, it’s a really fast weapon, enabling you to create bigger and longer combos. To balance the katana, Vergil can also use the Beowulf gloves and boots, the Mirage Blade, and Mirage Edge, which can really deal some deadly damage in mere seconds.
Thanks to this new playable character, this Special Edition of Devil May Cry 5 feels like an entirely new and different game. Vergil really plays differently and since you won’t be switching between characters, you’ll need to adapt and improvise to take down some of the tougher bosses. At its core, this still is Devil May Cry 5, meaning that some bosses were designed to be weak to V’s demonic creatures or Nero’s attacks. Without those, it sometimes feels unfair or even too difficult to take those bosses down as Vergil, who clearly uses different attacks and weapons. It’s a small price to pay however since this version really feels like a new Devil May Cry game and a lot of work clearly went into this release. Even if you played Devil May Cry 5 before, it’s still worth getting this upgrade thanks to Vergil.
A lot of content
Of course, Vergil isn’t the only reason why you should get excited about this release. First things first, this still is the same Devil May Cry 5 we all loved last year. If you missed out on the original release and want to know what it’s all about, you can easily read our original review on this link. Every bit of content discusses in that review is also present in this game and to make it even better, all of the previous DLC or content of the Deluxe version is available to use right from the start. This means you’ll have a lot of extra weapons right from the start and you’re able to use the EX-color for each character to make it even more fun. Of course, this also means you’re able to be really powerful right from the start, which won’t be for everyone but I personally enjoyed the amount of power those extra weapons brought to the table. Right from the start, I considered myself a worth demon hunter and it’s good to know that you’re never obligated to use those new weapons if you’re going for a more traditional approach.
It doesn’t really matter how you’re going to play this game but it’s great to see how many options and tools are given to you straight from the start to make your time with Devil May Cry 5 as fun as possible. It’s also worth mentioning that this version is on sale for a rather light price compared to the other games and this certainly offers an extra reason why this should be on your list. It’s by far the most complete and diverse Devil May Cry game on the market, offering the perfect starting point for those new to the franchise while the amount of content will also certainly please the veteran players. There’s something for everyone here and it’s certainly worth giving a shot. For those veterans, Capcom threw in some extra difficulty modes to keep you entertained.
The visual improvements
When I first played Devil May Cry 5 on my PlayStation 4 Pro, I was blown away by the visuals. Devil May Cry 5 was a gorgeous game to start with but on PlayStation 5, it all looks even more impressive. Thanks to the ray tracing and stable frame rate, the game really shines in its 4K graphics, really showcasing some gorgeous new details that weren’t noticeable on the past generation of consoles. It’s impressive to see how well this game performance on PlayStation 5 and it even elevates the global experience. Fighting demons never looked this good or played this fluently. It’s one of the more impressive games in the line-up and I can’t wait to see what the future will bring for these powerful new consoles. Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition certainly sets the bar for the future.
Conclusion:
Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition offers so much more than just a visual upgrade and truly feels like a new and better version of the game thanks to the playability of Vergil and the tons of fun extras. It’s a game worthy of the next-generation and for its smaller price, it should be on your radar without a doubt. This isn’t only the best version of Devil May Cry 5, it’s without a doubt one of the best entries in the entire franchise. Sharpen your katana and prepare to take down some demons in style!
