Tech Review: Razer Hammerhead True Wireless

Razer is one of the best companies for those who take gaming seriously. From top-notch keyboards and gaming mice to jaw-dropping Razer Blade laptops, the company is on a true winning streak when it comes to delivering quality products. As one of the best gaming centered headphone companies in the industry, it’s no surprise they came up with wireless earbuds. Similar to what Apple did with the Airpod, Razer offers quality wireless earbuds, giving gamers the best option to enjoy their mobile games all in the comfort of completely wireless earbuds.

What’s in the box?

The Razer Hammerhead True Wireless comes in the iconic Razer black and green, pink Quartz, or Mercury white, resembling Apple’s Airpods even more. It doesn’t matter which color you’ll go for as the box and its content will of course be the exact same. When you first open the box, you’ll be greeted with that typical Razer feeling, meaning they once again deliver a pretty looking box, displaying the content in an elegant yet professional way. Inside the box, you’ll find your new Razer Hammerhead earbuds safely inside some sturdy foam together with the charging box underneath it. Besides this, you’ll also find the instructions and manual, charging cable, silicone sleeves for the earbuds, and a handy wristband to carry your charging case with you. Of course, the main things you want to see here are the earbuds and charging case, so those will come out of the box first.

The charging case is made of light plastic which makes it incredibly easy to take with you everywhere you go. It’s a small pill-shaped box that easily slides into your pockets while you’re on the move. It’s not the most ground-breaking or best-looking charging case out there but for the price of these Hammerheads, it delivers what you would expect. As I reviewed the Mercury version I was extra careful not to scratch or damage my little white box. As it’s made out of light plastic, it has the tendency to become dirty rather quickly so you better take good care of the box while carrying it around. Next up are the earbuds themselves and those are truly amazing!

The earbuds

Just like Apple did with the first generation of Airpods, Razer created one-size-fits-all earbuds, which is always a risk if you ask me. Once I put them in my ears all my worries disappeared. They genuinely fit exceptionally well, even without the silicone sleeve which is meant for even better grip. Unlike the first generation Airpods, the Hammerheads stayed comfortable in my ears even while I was walking around or bending over to tie my shoelaces. It’s impressive to see how well designed the Hammerheads are since they really are incredibly comfortable to wear. They don’t stretch or hurt the inside of your ears but just comfortable sit in the natural form of your ears. Since these aren’t in-ear headphones, however, you’ll have to deal with some background noises but thanks to the quality of the audio, those aren’t really that noticeable. Once you’re done using them, you simply put them back into the charging case where they’ll magnetically snap into place, ready to be charged again. The only thing I often struggled with is the location of the earbuds inside the case. You put the right earbud left in the case and vice-versa… Which of course isn’t that intuitive and often resulted in slight irritation when putting them back in. Of course, the more I used them the better I got the hang of it but it’s worth mentioning nevertheless.

The quality of the product

Of course, the most important factor of earbuds is the way they sound. I tested it while watching Vikings on my iPhone 11 Pro while playing some games on the same device and while listing to my Spotify library. In all cases, I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. Although it’s a bit lower on the bass compared with let’s say Beats by dr.Dre, it does offer some nice sound quality to listen to your favorite music. The volume can reach just the right maximum so you can even enjoy your music while walking around. The same goes for movies and series, the voices of the actors are clearly understandable and the ambient noises don’t disappear in the background. If you want to use the Hammerheads as your standard wireless earbuds, you can be assured that the sound quality is certainly decent for its price. But of course, as it’s marketed as gaming earbuds we also played some games with it.

As Razer’s ss website claims, the earbuds have an incredibly low latency connection of 60ms, which should mean that you’ll never lose track of the audio in the game and it’s perfectly in sync with your movements. Although those things are a bit harder to test, I never noticed any audio lag while playing games, even in the higher-paced games. The audio stays sharp and lag-free from the moment you connect the Hammerheads with your device. They truly function as good as advertised. The only real downside about them is the fact that they can’t connect to multiple devices at once. If you want to use them on multiple devices, you’ll need to manually sync with the device you want to use and disconnect from the device you no longer want to use. It’s an easy fix of course but multiple connections would have been even better.

To make up for this, the Hammerheads do come with some nice extra features such as a companion app where you can easily tune the earbuds to your preferences, touch controls on the earbuds themselves enabling you to control your audio with just a simple touch, and to top it off they are water-resistant as well. They also function as a microphone so you can use them to make your calls too. All in all, the quality of the product is certainly high for its price, making it a fierce competitor in the wireless earbuds market!

Conclusion:

The Razer Hammerheads True Wireless Earbuds are a product of quality and offer exactly what you would expect: a great audio experience while gaming, watching movies, or listing to your music. The biggest plus of the Hammerheads is the way they fit in your ear, offering more than enough traction to stay right in place without feeling too heavy or uncomfortable. The charging case is made from light plastic which makes it easy to carry around with you. On top of that, you’ll get access to plenty of extra options to really tune in the audio just the way you like it. For its price, the Hammerheads True Wireless Earbuds certainly are worth considering!
