So it has to be said that I play a few shooter games now and then and this year alone I finished the entire Gears of War series, played hundreds of hours of Fortnite, dabbled in Halo and so much more. This game manages to combine a ton of features from other games, throws them in a hat, randomly selects a few, and actually make a really decent game out of it. I know it sounds crazy, but I actually did not hate this game.

Take for example Gears of War, the fast reload system, it’s something that often got on my nerves. Missing the sweet spots delayed reloading times and thus making you a sitting duck out there. The GI Joe game implements this perfectly and I actually did not hate it as much.

Take for example the initial Halo games and their aiming mechanic where you mostly did not have even the most basic of aim assists. Often leading you to empty your clip into the void or when lucky the enemy behind them. At least you always have a second player to cover your back and even the AI was surprisingly decent.

Graphically this game looks like you would expect it to. Originally a cartoon/comic with its own very unique style for the time it came out and in all honesty, I used to wake up during the weekends just to watch them on TV. Yes, I am a GI Joe fan and I do feel the atmosphere of the original Show has not been ignored. I even recognized some very familiar faces.

While the game is far from perfect, it does have its charm and despite my first impression of the game being rather disappointing, the more I played, the more I enjoyed it. If I were to make a negative remark, however, it would be the lack of guidance in some parts of the game despite it’s mostly being a hand held approach to the shooter genre.

In conclusion, the game surprised me and that is saying a lot. During my first hour, I was intent on giving it a failing score. Not knowing what to do and being stuck in a single place is never fun. But letting myself get intentionally killed, so I could restart, it did trigger the right event and I was able to move on, and slowly but surely I got more and more fun out of the game. I do wish there was a better sort of aim assist present …
