Whenever you have the guts to call your studio, Cranky Watermelon, I’m already intrigued. When you release a game called ‘Boomerang Fu,’ you have me reeled in. I’m a sucker for these kinds of flashy, colorful party games, and since we’re dealing with a heatwave – we could all use some refreshing fruit, no?
Slice and dice your friends with boomerangs in this action-packed party game, developed by Cranky Watermelon. Join a crew of your favorite foods as you grill, chill, and spill your enemies. Discover ridiculous power-ups and stack them together in deadly combinations to become the ultimate Boomerang Fu master.
Boomerang Fu!
That’s the perfect summary for the game since it’s nothing more and nothing less. It’s the ideal party game for those who prefer a quick game over Mario Party. It’s time to journey to a culinary world as you do battle in over 30 Kung Fu arenas, each filled with unique tools and traps. I compared it with an all-out battle fusion between Overcooked, Brawhalla & Smash Bros. It’s quirky and fun and easy to master.
Most games nowadays live by the rule of ‘better stolen than badly designed,’ and Boomerang Fu does this in a way. The game offers a wide selection of game modes, in which you can join forces with your friends to take on the ingenious AI opponents or each other. You can also opt for a different model, which reminded me of the Shine race in Mario Kart Double Dash. Instead of racing, your dispute over the precious Golden Boomerang in a frantic alternative game mode.
Controls & Gameplay
As I already mentioned, the controls are easy to master, and a lot of multiplayer games can learn something from Boomerang Fu. It only takes one stick and three buttons to pulverize your pals. Deflect attacks, recall dropped boomerangs, and curve your throws around corners to become a powerful boomerang assassin. Sure, the game gets even better when using the different power-ups, which can be stacked. Do you want explosive multi-boomerangs? We got you covered. You want to dash throughs walls while throwing ice-boomerangs, also understood that one.
The main selling point of Boomerang Fu is, of course, the quirky style of both the game and the characters. I had a blast slicing up my friends with my donut-hero. There’s a lot of detail put into the characters since the milk, for example, spoils when you cut it into two. I’ll let you figure out the rest for yourself, but trust me, it’s worth it to try them all out. And since they are all ‘equal’ in a sense, you only have to pick your favorite food or beverage; and off you go!
Conclusion:
So, to conclude! Boomerang Fu is easy to learn, fun to master party brawler, which will be a hit at every party you throw (stay safe with COVID, etc.). Since it’s a party brawler and nothing more, there’s a sure public for these kinds of games. I liked it, and I have a lot of ‘younger’ kids growing up in my neighborhood, so it will be fun to play Boomerang Fu with a few of them since they only tend to play games like Fortnite. If you are in the market for a more… singleplayer-oriented brawler, look the other way.
