Hands-on: Marvel’s Avengers

Welcome to our review of the Marvel’s Avengers Beta first weekend, we played it on Playstation 4!
Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a new, hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco.

The celebration turns deadly when a mysterious enemy causes a catastrophic accident which results in massive devastation.

Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, a sprawling adventure ignites when a determined young woman named Kamala Khan sets out to reassemble and rebuild the Avengers to stop the unchecked power of the secretive new force known as AIM.

Marvel’s Avengers continues the epic journey with new Heroes and new narrative delivered on an ongoing basis, for the definitive Avengers gaming experience.

When I first heard about this game, I thought it would be either amazing or greatly disappointing and the beta is proving to be a little bit of both. In itself, this game is quite amazing. The fighting is mostly great and you get to clobber tons of enemies. Much like one of my favorite genres, the Musou games, this game is close to my heart in the genre and despite not getting hundreds of enemies at once, there is still this feeling of being swarmed by enemies.

The characters each have their own attacks and straight from the start, you are thrown into the action. The beta is a little overwhelming at first as you get to play all the characters in the first half-hour and it really gives you a feeling of what to expect later on in the game. It also gave me personally a glimpse at the fact that the game is a little challenging. You need to pay proper attention to what you do or you do get killed quickly.

Another minor downside to the game, I had a few times where I was clueless as to what I needed to do. The first time I was playing with Kamala example given, I had to turn on three different generators but there were no real indicators of what I needed to do. I jumped down the gap more than once, thinking I had to land on a ledge below. Once I had figured this out, I was able to move on, but it just stuck by me that I had no clue what to do.

But…

I had so much fun, the game plays nice and fluidly. I just loved pounding on enemies and those special attacks really got my blood pumping. At one point, I was playing as the Hulk and I was facing one of his biggest enemies, purposely leaving the name off of the article as to leave the surprise unspoiled. It was awesome and I even had some great attack patterns I tried to take him down. Yes, I went as far as to plan out how to attack and take down the big guys….

As far as this beta goes, I am mostly positive. I really look forward to play the final product when it drops after a few weeks! I will dive deeper into the tons of upgrades at that time as my lack of playing time did limit my ability to properly play everything so far. I guess that is proof of how the game is great?
