Welcome to our review of Warhammer 40K Mechanicus, a true turn-based strategy game from the Warhammer franchise released on Nintendo Switch.
Take control of one of the most technologically advanced armies in the Imperium – The Adeptus Mechanicus. As Magos Dominus Faustinius, you’ll lead the expedition on the newly rediscovered planet of Silva Tenebris. Manage resources, discover long-forgotten tech, plan tactical operations using the Noosphere technology, and control your Tech-Priests every move.
Your every decision will shape the missions ahead and ultimately decide the fate of the troops under your command. However, choose your path carefully – the Imperium depends on it.
Flesh is weak! Upgrade your Tech-Priests limbs with mechanical augments made from the blessed metals of the Omnissiah. Customize your team with hundreds of possibilities, creating a squad to suit your playstyle.
Make tough decisions that will forge the future from your Ark Mechanicus, The Caestus Metalican, and send you towards alternate endings for a truly unique playthrough.
I have a love/hate relationship with the Warhammer franchise. I love most games from the series but there have been some serious pieces of crap in the franchise too. For me personally, the game is either a hit or miss, almost never something in between. I adored the space marine game and that triggered me buying a full-blown pro gaming laptop in the past.
Enter Mechanicus, a turn-based strategy game. Now all fans of GamingBoulevard will remember what I said about too many Strategy games being released on Switch, the words I still stand by. Just a few great strategy games out there really deserve your time and spoiler alert, Mechanicus is among them!
Warhammer 40K Mechanicus is a glorious strategy game with tons of easily learned mechanics. The entire story is typical Warhammer lore and the entire way to move around the map reminded me of Darkest Dungeon but with the ability to pick what “room” I wanted to visit next.
The strategy part is the usual you’d expect in the top tier of the genre, pick where you want to move, do your attack, if you got the needed credits, you can do additional moves. This already sets itself apart from many lesser strategy titles and let me tell you, ranged attack snipe followed by a move towards the enemy and then go in for a melee attack… I love the versatility given in Mechanicus.
On top of the really decent amount of moves and tactics you can employ, you are also blessed with even more options as you can often chose to engage or not, often given 3 different options. The variety sets it above many other titles easily.
Storywise, the usual Warhammer lore is to be expected, good versus evil, and highly overpowered enemies that need to be taken down.
Often I have complained about the Switch screen being too small for this genre and while I would prefer slightly bigger graphics. I was not completely annoyed or distraught by the screen size in handheld mode. I did get used to it rather soon too….
Warhammer 40K Mechanicus is also surprisingly properly balanced. I never really felt like there were any impossible fights in my time with the game and I really enjoyed my time with the game. This might be my second favorite Warhammer game…
In conclusion, Warhammer 40K Mechanicus sets itself apart by giving us a solid experience with tons of options. Do you have what it takes to survive?
