Indie Corner: HyperDot

Welcome to our review of HyperDot, another game from the Xbox Game Pass and it is frustratingly fun!

HyperDot is a minimal action arcade masterpiece with one rule: dodge everything. Evade enemies and test your skills in over 100 trials in the campaign mode, outlast your friends in multiplayer battles, or build custom challenges with the level editor.

When I saw this game appear on my Game Pass app on my iPhone, I just thought why not try this. It is a small game and while I never look at graphics, it presented to me as a basic puzzle game of the dodge genre. I am a fan of puzzle games and while not a fan of bullet hell games, I did think this game was frustratingly fun.

So the main idea is just to dodge everything for a preset amount of time. You are in the middle of the playing field and you just dodge everything that comes at you for the required amount of time. Be it 6,8,10 or more seconds, there is always a structure to the chaos, at least at first. At first, this game is beyond easy. Only being careless will get you to fail a level at first or like myself, by trying out how sensitive the controls are. Spoiler alert, they really are and I would recommend getting them under control prior to hitting the higher levels.

Once you pass the original levels, where the inbound dots are basically just going in a single line and well, you know what is coming now. Homing dots! While they are not the hardest to avoid, you can no longer just let yourself rest in a blind spot in the playing field.

Next way to level up the toughness? Why not make it dark and only when they are closeby will the dots appear again. Kind of like in real life when you turn on and off a light, whatever is closest to you, it will be easier to see. This principle is exactly the same. It adds a more than normal level of pain on an already serious nerve breaking game.

HyperDot is a lot of fun  and with its inclusion on Game Pass, it is yet another reason to go green. This is another hidden gem on an already heavily loaded Game Pass and I can only applaud both Microsoft and the developers for bringing us another great game!

In conclusion, HyperDot is a small yet amazing little dodge-all game. I want more games like this!
