Review: Zombie Army 4: Dead War

Welcome to our review of Zombie Army 4: Dead War, the new game in the Zombie Army franchise and Rebellion delivers once again.

The year is 1946. A year ago Hitler, defeated, initiated “Plan Z” Now Europe lies in ruins. A brave band of heroes managed to cast the zombie army and the demon Führer back to hell. But little do they know… HITLER’S HORDES ARE BACK FOR MORE!

Rising Feb 4, 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the Epic Games Store for PC. We played it on Xbox One and boy, did we slay some zombies in this one. For this review, I mostly played the campaign and very little of the horde mode. I will be brief, I was unable to play with some of my friends and modes like Horde mode are best played with friends.

So let’s get started with the basics, this is “yet another zombie game” but Rebellion, the developers, do things right all the way. While most of us may known them from Sniper Elite and Zombie Army games, they also had their hands in some of the Harry Potter amongst others. A very well received developer with a great library of games released over the many years they have been in business.

In Zombie Army 4, Hitler is dead but his zombies are still out there and it is your mission to slowly thin out their numbers and as you can guess, stay alive. Together with some weapons at your disposal, you need to get yourself out of their reach or fight to stay alive.

Even in the initial levels, the amount of inbound zombies can be overwhelming and feel quite unfair, but it is never really unfair to the extent of not being able to beat them completely. My preferred weapon of choice is the sniper rifle and take out as many as possible with a single bullet.

When they surround me, I do my best to either run away or beat them down to a pulp, though in all honesty, I run more than I fight. The reason why I run away is simple. I want to stay alive. I want to take aim and get rid of the zombies the old fashioned ways.

Zombie Army 4 takes a rather funny way to add to the suspense. In one of the first levels already, you get hunted down by zombies covered with bombs. They get too close, they will go boom. Graphically, the entire game is awesome, but nothing really beats an up close explosion really.

As you progress through the storyline, you are often given new ammo, be the bullets or grenades, they are around aplenty. Every so often, you also encounter work benches. The tools that dreams are made off. The ability to enhance your weapons is the first real high I got in this overwhelming game. Mind you that I did play 2 of the Sniper Elite games and part of the ZA Trilogy, so I knew what to expect.

The exploding innards, … I knew what to expect as I recently finished Sniper Elite 3 and got my fair share of double and triple kills, Zombie Army 4 however does it even better. More than often will one bullet be able to take down numerous enemies, I loved letting gas tanks explode and they are usually powerful enemies to take down entire hordes.

One could say that if you played one, you played em all. That does apply in a way, but I will say, Zombie Army 4 improves on Zombie Army Trilogy. It just felt like a better game overall.

In all honesty, I had planned to buy the game on my birthday, which is also february 4th. Getting the review code allowed me to play a personal wishlist game early and I have to say this game is not disappointing me in one bit. It is challenging but properly balanced in my humble opinion.

I was expecting to kill hundreds if not thousands of zombies. Sometimes in the most gruesome of ways. Displaying my best sniping skills and running like a coward when needed. While Zombie Army 4 is not a “very intellectual” game, I do think it keeps you at your wits end and that is what it is all about. That adrenalin rush when you realise shit is about to go down.

In conclusion, Zombie Army 4 is a great game for its genre. Rebellion did an awesome job getting the game to the point of me probably losing sleep over it. The controls feel about as well as can be. I never felt like I missed a shot due to the game mechanics and I plan to survive the zombie outbreak…
