Indie Corner: Farabel

Welcome to our review of Farabel, a turn based strategy game filled with options and challenges!

The strategy game that starts at the end! You know how to level up, but can you level down? Be smart to survive! Your hero is strong, victorious and lived happily ever after. The End… b…but wait…the game just started! In this turn-based strategy game, you begin at the end of the story and have to go back in time to prevent war. And obviously, the whole gaming experience is turned upside down!

After each victory comes a jump into the past, when you were not that strong. Think carefully to choose the right points to weaken and still survive. Can you manage with less health? Or do you prefer to deal less damage? You will have to make the right (tricky) decisions to anticipate your next fights. Thankfully your units offer a wide range of special abilities that can help you. Master the art of leveling down and find out how it all began!

Farabel is a smart approach to the genre as it does the story backwards but like my usual reviews, I will leave the storyline exploration for you to discover. My policy of no spoilers is respected as usual. I did feel the desire to give some spoilers, but I am keeping my initial promise from when I started reviewing, leave the story to the gamers and not to a reviewer to tell all.

Farabel is a turn based tactical game with 3 basic features. You got attackers, a healer and then yourself, the knight who can manipulate time. The attackers are easy to describe, you use them for brute force and let them head into the action and just attack! Archers from a distance, infantry heading straight in with added rage bonus, …

The healer is probably your most important chess piece in this tactical game. You need to place your healer in such a way to keep healing all your injured pawns and regain their health. Place the healer in the wrong way and the healing power helps the wrong people and not only that, you open up the healer for attacks. In my humble opinion the most important piece on the battlefield.

Next up, you! You are a mounted rider with the power to take back time and return a pawn to its previous position. This opens up a whole new playing field and can bring you back from the brink of death. Imagine you move in your healer, let her heal everyone and then turn back time to allow her to heal either a second time or to escape from the battle so she won’t get killed!

The possibilities are endless and can go from hit and run tactics to double healing to most effective sniping methods. My very first game, I took down a massive enemy with a health of 100, which was 5 times more than my average pawn. I used the time trick to heal up my crew twice when they had the big enemy cornered. It allowed me to escape death with at least 2 infantry pawns and before I knew it, I had taken him down.

The sheer fun of being able to plan out such a stealth tactic, it made me smile more than once.

In conclusion, Farabel is more than just a tactical game, it is such a fun and smart game, I can not put it down!
