Welcome to our review of Way of the Turtle, another little Apple Arcade game and we tried it on a MacBook Air running OS Catalina!
Way of the Turtle, Illusion Labs’ brand new title exclusive for Apple Arcade, is finally here!
In this charming adventure platformer, two turtles have been stranded on a tropical island in the middle of nowhere and separated from each other. Join them on their journey to reunite with one another. Beware though… Trouble brews on this island. They are about to find out that this tropical paradise is not as innocent as it first seemed.
Many of the island’s inhabitants and even the very earth itself have been cursed by evil magic. Corrupted and transformed into vicious monsters and dangerous obstacles.
I had been playing this for a while now on my iPhone 8 and I have to say, this is the game on Apple Arcade that needs a controller. I had it on my phone at work and during my breaks, I did a little dabbling on the game and I have to say, I did not fully enjoy it. Touch controls are not my favorite and all through my gameplay, I just missed a few steps here and there in this fun little platformer.
I even tried it at home with my Nimbus controller and while it was much better, I was still missing out on the big screen experience. So fast forward to today. Apple just dropped the OS Catalina update which would be bringing Apple Arcade to my laptop. It was wonderful! I had to figure out first how it worked on my MacBook Air and spoiler alert, you just need to go into the app store, click the arcade logo and download the app. The app itself is not put in a folder named Arcade or so, just straight with all the other apps in your applications folder.
Way of the Turtle is so much fun on the big screen, I am even considering getting an Apple TV over it. It is a simple platformer in itself but it looks so cute and it reacts so fine once you go play it on the laptop. I really loved the added abilities controlling. On the iPhone, I had to tap a specific place on the screen, but on the MacBook, I could just press a button on my Nimbus controller. It made the game so much more fluid and I avoided a lot of random deaths right then and there.
Way of the Turtle plays rather well on Apple Arcade and yes, it does handle save games across platforms. I had my iPhone save game transfer seamlessly to my mac and back, I guess that’s the power of Apple, right? As a platformer, you know what to expect from this game too. You are in a 2.5D world and you collect coins and stomp on enemies. You use your abilities to the best of yours and make sure you do not get splashed.
It is properly paced and even the sliding downhill parts are fun and slowly get more interesting and while this is not a very challenging game, it sure is very open to gamers of all ages!
In conclusion, Way of the Turtle is great on the big screen though it had some issues on mobile…
