I played the original game, AeternoBlade 1, which was actually a not so very positive experience as this game was highly repetitive and just not fun at all. That being the kicker here, no fun at all. The game did look quite nice, for a side-scrolling brawler like this, it did sport some above-average graphics. The game felt mostly boring and well, I had some second thoughts heading into the second game.
So fast forward to me receiving the review code and installing the game. AeternoBlade II was installed rather quickly with a 3.3 gigabyte download. I started up the game and all these bad memories returned upon playing the game. AeternoBlade II is basically just a new game and despite some minor changes, you still got the exact same issues. A pretty looking game with rough edges and not just that fun of a game.
I felt the gameplay was very repetitive as you usually need a ton of hits before taking down even the lightest of enemies and while they do not hit you that often, I dislike the button-mashing feeling. When you are cutting back to the cutscenes, these are often blurry during motions and though nicely presented, they are not the best examples of what these games could have been.
AeternoBlade II is such a weird game really. The original had some rather bad ratings already and you would think they’d listen to fan concerns, heck even I sent in a concern in the past. I would make the characters a little more powerful at first but the uphill battle against some of the boss fights would remain. Even the first big fight in this game, all about hit and run. There was absolutely no challenge in this fight as long as you took the easy way out. I tried beating it a few times based on power alone, but that always ended up in my early demise.
Not all is bad though, AeternoBlade II is a game tailer made for people that are into side-scrolling brawlers. While not my favorite of genres, I can see a few of my own friends already like this game. That price point though… Speaking personally, I would never spend this money on a game like this. Nothing to do with the game, just too expensive.
In conclusion, AeternoBlade II is a disappointing sequel to an equally disappointing game. Sold at a very high price point, AeternoBlade II is a no-no for me…
