Welcome to our review article on the latest Indie World presentation, followed by a short opinion piece on what we felt while watching this presentation!
This presentation starts off with Kirk Scott and a small intro video. Katie Casper is joining us for this presentation.
First game is called Risk of Rain 2, a roguelike game that is coming this summer 2019.
Second game, Eastward, from Chuckle fish, a fun exploration game is coming in 2020.
Third is Freedom Finger, a crazy space shooter, where every enemy is your weapon as a monniker. It looks quite special and touts a fall 2019 release date.
Next up, Röki, Follow the adventure, making friends with animals is only the beginning, coming next winter.
Fifth game is Torchlight 2, a really fun trailer for this one, with two cartoon characters from the series sitting next to each other in pretty much every possible setting, coming soon on September 3rd!
Next is a skateboarding game called Skater XL, board control this advanced will allow you to say no two tricks are ever the same.
Youropa is number 7 in this presentation. You puzzle, you game and this game is all about turning things upside down, out in winter 2019.
Next game to turn up the heat is Superhot! This game had already been leaked prior to the event and can best be described as a first person brawler/shooter all in one. Out now on the eshop!
Dungeon Defenders Awakened is the next game, this classic indie gets a new lease on life and has been a standard for dungeon defense games in the past. February 2020 is the release date and this is a timed exclusive!
The Touryst is up next, Shin’en brings us their new game in November 2019 and this one seems to be some sort of role playing game in the familiar minecraft design.
Fabraz brings us Skellboy, a game where you can not only switch out weapons but also body parts. Knowing Fabraz, we will be in for a treat. Released on December third.
Earth Night is the next one, dragons have now conquered the world and in this bright and colorful game, we appear to be flying, running, jumping and so much more amidst the dragons. Out later this year.
Number thirteen is the one and only Hotline Miami from Devolver Digital, this was also highly rumoured to be coming and I am happy to see such a high profile indie game coming to switch, both games in this collection will be out later today!
Blasphemous, Close to the Sun, Cat Quest 2, Spiritfarer, Trine 4, Creature in the well, One Finger Death Punch, Best Friend Forever, Phogs, What the Golf, Kine, Hypercharge: Unboxed, Northgard, Sparklite and Munchkin: Quacked Quest were all joined into one big trailer, one after the other. A most powerful ending of the presentation.
The one more thing moment:
Ori and the blind forest! This highly rumoured game from Xbox is now on its way to Nintendo Switch and it will be out on September 27!
Needless to say, this presentation ended on a very high note as Ori is actually one of my current wishlist games. I would say this presentation was highly impressive, but quite frankly, the middle of the presentation failed to grab my attention.
I admit to being spoiled before and honestly speaking, I had incredibly high expectations only to be left hungry in the middle. I dislike roguelikes and overly wacky games and those just happened to be the initial highlight of the game and well, I was not impressed with them.
Freedom Finger did pick up the pace for me as it just looked incredibly fun to play, a game where a flying hand grabs enemies and then uses them at your disposal, the idea is fun and novel and I look forward to this game!
Next, Roki and Torchlight both got me hyped enough to want to play them, one for being so soothing and curiosity inducing, Roki really got me there and then Torchlight 2, with the wackiest of videos and it just screams “play me in the laundromat”, no pun intended. These two really got my attention up and sadly it was followed up by some “lesser” games in my humble opinion.
I am not into skating and despite this game looking fun and innovative, it just did not do a thing for me. But not just this one, it took me a few games to get back into things and before I knew it, the final big reel of games came up.
That one was the bomb. Plain and simple, the bomb. So much goodness and I think I want to play at least 7 out of them. That end of show reel really did the trick. Sparklite, Muchkin, BFF, Trine, … so many great looking games to revive me from a small dip in interest I had previously encountered.
Only to be followed by the most annoying monniker in life, the one more thing line has been so milked, companies may want to just stop using it. Despite being a highly impressive title, despite being rumoured and everything, I think we should step away from this one line for life…
Ori however is the gem of this presentation and despite being rumoured and me actually expecting it, I was still happy to see it announced. I think it might have maybe gone first instead and really raise the bar for what to expect because now, I think it started great, hit a dip in the middle to go rockethigh into the sky to finish it off.
I salute Nintendo and their efforts to really bring so many great games to Nintendo Switch and this Indie world once again provided something to look forward to for everyone.
