War Tech Fighters is a game that is very much a throwback for me personally to my childhood, when I was mostly following anime series in the earliest of mornings during weekends. I even remember messing up daylight saving time and being up 2 hours early to watch Macross on Super channel. I adored the changing mechas, despite not understanding everything that was being said, but as a 9-year-old kid, you don’t really care much.

Its main appeal was nothing more than big ass robots that moved around like humans and that fought aliens. War Tech Fighters is exactly like that, but a lot more modern in feeling. It feels more modern also in controls, though I had some qualms there, I often ran out of energy and at first, it was unclear what I was doing wrong.

During battle, nothing is really hard to hit, just that some need a lot more pizzazz to take down and while this is a generic game protocol, it is rather exquisitely balanced in this game. You just know an enemy is harder upon its sighting but also when you engage it. The game really hit this one out of the park.

Graphically, this War Tech Fighters game is darn impressive. It runs rather smoothly on Switch, though the loading times in between missions are a bit long. I’d say that Mech lovers would not mind much, but for me personally, I do think it took too long. Despite loving the action and the things surrounding you, I am not sure if the game should have downscaled a little to keep the loading times “lower”. Just my two cents.

Outside of fighting, there is quite a lot to do in the hangar of the space ship you call your base. You can do a lot of customizing on your mech, there is a missions option and so much more. I did not “deep dive” into this game due to lack of time, I simply can not spend 20+ hours extra on this game right now, but from what I have seen, I did dig everything thrown at me.

In conclusion, War Tech Fighters is more than its abbreviation and despite the wtf feeling while waiting for stuff to load, this game does bring its A-game when it comes to mecha fighting. I do feel lovers of the genre might consider this a must-own title, but for me personally, the loading times kind of threw me off balance a bit. I thought very hard about the score, to which extent would I let the waiting game influence my score and I decided to clarify my score. I would give this game a 7 if not for the waiting times, but I would consider reducing it by a full point… It would be too unfair because it is too decent for a mere 6. I went in between and that is how my score came to be!
