Welcome to our review of Pawarumi, an awesome looking shoot’em up game that is fun to boot!
Rock-Paper-Scissors… with LASERS!
In a world where the Council rules the nations with an iron fist, you play as Axo, pilot of the legendary ship Chukaru. Experience her fight with the limitless armies of the Council, become the master of Chukaru’s power and find the true meaning behind all your actions. A dark secret is yet to be revealed!
Pawarumi is a modern shoot’em up set in a retro-futuristic sci-fi pre-Columbian universe. You’ll take control of the almighty ship Chukaru and its three unique weapons! Shoot wisely to either do double damage, heal yourself or charge your Super Attack!
Pawarumi looks amazing and in between fighting sessions, you are getting hit by some amazing transitional videos, I must say they look most stunning. In a pure 3D feeling, you get the gist of what this game would have looked like in virtual reality, it is that good.
I must admit that sadly, it is not 3D at all in gameplay and that is regretful as those interludes clearly show how to do it. In true shmup fashion, Pawarumi is a classical shmup in every way of the word and true to the genre. You know what to expect and aside from the three main weapons, you get nothing out of the ordinary at all.
I did enjoy Pawarumi though, despite not being more than an ordinary shmup in feeling, despite its highly impressive graphics. My favorite part of the game is actually the red attack as it has homing capacities and that really was fun to play with. The other two were fun too, just not as helpful. I tend to prefer special weapons in shmups and a basic “straight-ahead” weapon is not my “weapon of choice”.
I must also mention that despite the negative comments made, Pawarumi is very accessible though. The easy mode is incredibly easy and might be the best choice for the occasional gamer as they will easily fly through the initial levels. Do not underestimate the harder settings, like most shmups, Pawarumi will punish you for going to the toughest level from the start. As it should!
In conclusion, as there is very little to say about shmups in general, you either hate them or love them. I am more or less in the love category when they are properly balanced and not just bullet hell material. Some games love those, but not me. Speaking about Pawarumi, that is a properly balanced game and the awesome graphics do warrant the score in my humble opinion.
