Indie Corner: Mr. Blaster

Welcome to our review of Mr Blaster, a worms like game out now on Nintendo Switch!

Mr Blaster – new game inspired by classics like Worms – will bring the joy of shooting your opponent in the face to the whole new level!

This fast-paced, casual game is set in the colorful cosmic environment with incredibly fun ragdoll physics and easy, well-known mechanics – with a twist! Join a space adventure and take aim at your enemy, shoot with precision and dodge their attacks – with random encounters like flying satellites or asteroids making things more interesting!

Test yourself in solo mode by fighting against bots – it may sound easy but beware, your opponents will get harder to beat with your progress and you might end up with a rocket in your… Face!

Train your aim by destroying computer AI in an epic duel – this will help you become the best amongst other Blasters!

Mr Blaster is mostly a very basic game at a low price point. For those familiar with the Worms franchise, you will know how to play the game without any further introduction really. For those unaware, it is basically a turn-based fight between two players, you and someone else or the computer in this case. You take aim, set up the speed and angle and then you fire.

After you got your shot in, it is the other players turn and so on. When you hit the end of the energy bar, you either win or lose. It is that simple. That is the basic premise of Worms and Mr Blaster does take it 1 step further. Just one, but it is possibly the only thing that keeps this game interesting. If not for the cheap price point, I would be less positive about this title…

Now the one step further is moving platforms, which is easy considering the game plays out in outer space. But in the end, this game is not that hard. If it had not been for the moving items around the platforms, this game would have been ridiculously easy. After a few games, I was already going for headshots only. With the sole intention to get bonus points so I could free up more and different players.

A very basic game that really just has its price point speaking for it. That is my big conclusion for this game. Graphics are basic, gameplay is basic and nothing screams replayability really. I am missing a storyline, something more to put it over. But alas, a basic score awaits this basic game.

In conclusion, I have said all I wanted about the game being basic, but as I have said it before… A great game does not need amazing graphics or the likes. Sadly Mr Blaster was just too basic to become a hidden gem and while the moniker of a hidden gem is highly overrated, I would more call it a diamond in the rough. If some edits were made and some small mechanics were more refined, like added speed, I actually do think Mr Blaster could shine. But for now, this failing grade awaits…
