Review: Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Welcome to our review of Wolfenstein: Youngblood, the first modern co-op Wolfenstein adventure. This review is all about playing it on Playstation 4.

Nineteen years after the events of Wolfenstein II, BJ Blazckowicz has disappeared after a mission into Nazi-occupied Paris. Now, after years of training from their battle-hardened father, BJ’s twin daughters, Jess and Soph Blazkowicz, are forced into action.

Team up with a friend or play alone. Level up, explore, and complete missions to unlock new abilities, weapons, gadgets, cosmetics, and more to complement your playstyle and customize your appearance. Wolfenstein: Youngblood features the most open-ended Wolfenstein experience to date. From a new base of operations located deep in the heart of the Paris catacombs, plan how and when to attack and dismantle the Nazi regime.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a game I really looked forward to. I played the previous game on Nintendo Switch and finished it within weeks after obtaining the review code. I had high hopes going into this game and let me tell you right from the start, it is a darn good game!

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is all about a magnificent approach on the co-op genre and even in story mode, you are hit with the magnificence of this game. It is looking awesome and despite the new features, you still feel very much alive in the Wolfenstein lore. Now, let us delve into the co-op approach and why I think it is so darn amazing.

Basically, you and your twin sister are all about finding your father and killing the nazis. Sidenote, killing nazis in games has always been a beloved genre to first-person shooters and this Wolfenstein: Youngblood game is no exception. As you are twins, you also share your life but also the skills.

So everything you do, you have your companion at hand who will join you and assist you. You die? She can revive you as long as she is not taken down either. There are some shared lives together but if either of you dies, the “level” restarts. This is both an advantage and a clear disadvantage as it can clearly work both ways. During my gameplays, I often try out a variety of things, such as dieing on purpose or trying to purposely run out of ammo. I had tons of fun with the games and I clearly saw the benefits of not just jumping in.

The tactics needed at times, it is more than just doing things on gut feeling, you often need to sit back and see what is going on around you. Studying the map of the layout around you, like the very first level, which is inside a Zeppelin, you just need to be so careful not to get jumped by several enemies at once. There were some minor noises during my gameplay, I’d call them pure enjoyment…

As I played it on my PlayStation 4, I have to say I experienced little to no delays and graphics were top notch! As to be expected because let’s be honest, when you see Bethesda in the credits, you know you got a great game in your hands. To be honest, I wish I could play this game on a bigger TV to enjoy it even more. I must admit I am still rocking a 40-inch plasma, which is amazing for games, but Wolfenstein: Youngblood made me want to buy a new TV almost.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is not easy but it is also not unfair in its difficulty levels. It may be a little challenging at first when you are still trying to figure out how to play, but the longer I played, the more I became a “natural”. The gameplay just felt so natural, like it was honed to perfection. I actually had a lot of fun playing!

I admit I am actually buying the game on Nintendo Switch on release day. I had this planned regardless of getting the review code for the PS4 version, but now that I played it on the TV, I look forward to playing it on the small screen of the Switch. Really compare the gameplay and I want to know personally what the best platform will be for my personal enjoyment, I may even share my findings on the site!

In conclusion, Wolfenstein: Youngblood is a magnificent ode to the genre and franchise with a twist. The co-op adds difficulty but it also adds pizzazz, more than anything else. I think the execution of this idea is very novel and if you enjoyed the previous Wolfenstein games, it should be a no-brainer to get this one too!!
