Welcome to our review of Meow Motors, a more technical yet still fun racer clearly intended for the younger players or the crazy cat lady gamer.
Meet the kitties, the main heroes of the new go-kart racing game!
You will take to the track and play as one of a dozen colorful cats memorable for their different characteristics and unique personalities. Overcome various difficulties of the tracks drifting through mines and bombs, stop and slow down your competitors by blasting them with bubble gum and other astonishing weapons. And don’t forget to gather power-ups along the way if you want to be the fastest driver on the track!
The game will amaze you with Dynamic gameplay that has three different modes: circle races, drifts and ‘strike’ mode. 20 different tracks where kitties will compete. 10 kitties with unique abilities that will help you gain an advantage, 10 power-ups with unique effects to defeat your competitors
Charge your power-ups and get a more powerful effect! Overtake opponents, drift and get bonuses for it. Go grab your kitty and start your first crazy ride!
Meow Motors actually looks quite fine when you first start the game, graphics are on the comical style of the spectrum and the kitties do make it more fun than other small scale racers. At the 15 euro price point, I do think this game has some great bang for the buck, yet the game is far from perfect.
It’s a more technical racer so you can go out of bounds if you are being careless and yes, you can use weapons to destroy your enemies and their cars. Destroying those kitties is more fun than you’d imagine. I played it first during my break at work and I was actually very “not impressed” at first sight. My first gameplay felt boring and the graphics did kind of bug me.
Once I got used to the steering mechanics and yes, despite the fact that they are easy, you can still go out of bounds, something I encountered in my very first game, I was in first position when it happened. WAS. I came in fourth out of 4 drivers and I was actually quite annoyed that a single mistake would be so punished. Did I really just lose the entire thing after a single mistake?
Yes, quite simply yes, because I had taken the long road ’round. There are shortcuts all over the place, though most are really subtle. Once I retried the same course, I came in second. The disappointment was still slightly there but my third game was the one that saw me come out victorious. I actually smiled and instantly went to the next course, during which the on board weapons were to be used to take down as many enemies as possible.
Before I knew it, I picked up the needed ammo and I was taking out enemies all over the place. I was actually enjoying myself. To my own big surprise and really despite the bigger technical side. The game does not hold your hand, you can purposely drive into obstacles and so much more. The steering might be on the easier side, you can’t just ignore the basics or else!
One thing that did bug me however, maybe my age is speaking here, the over the top graphics when you do a jump. The kitty takes flight on its own almost, just barely hanging onto the steering wheel. It was fun the first time, but to see it as often as it happens… It became more of a boring attribute rather than something cool.
In itself, I think this game has potential, the contents are quite expansive and it does provide value for its money. The elephant in the room in case of games like these, is how it lives up to the big three racing games. It does fall short compared to the big three on Nintendo Switch, but for its price and most importantly for children, it is great value.
In conclusion, despite some minor annoyances, I think Meow Motors is a fun game! I am rating it at 7 but this is mostly due to several better racing games out there, if we looked at the price as a main contributor, it could easily go up to an actual 8!
