I never played a single Assassin’s Creed game for more than about an hour. Sure, I was lucky enough to play the “other game on Switch” when I was in Japan, but for a physical game, this is the first one. Even on my other consoles, I never really got into the franchise and despite owning several of them, I never got the proper time to just sit down and play. Until now…
Assassin’s Creed in itself is one of the most famous franchises and goes right into the category of the greatest games, combining weapon use, parkour and assassination skills, throw in a big world and great story and that is the bottom line for any game in the franchise. In Assassin’s Creed 3, we are thrown into the colonial era of the Americas, where we follow Haytham Kenway, who at first kills someone in the opera house in England to obtain a medallion.
Shortly after, the story leads us on a ship to America where there are signs of mutiny and as you take control of Haytham, you get the experience of finding out how and what is happening. The story does a great job of guiding you through the storylines and slowly but surely, you are taught all the needed game mechanics to survive. I especially loved being able to ride a horse and fire a gun or even the basic parkour mechanics. I never realized what a great game series I have been missing.
Shortly after arriving in America, you set off to find missing bits and pieces of information so you can get more allies in your quest of the vast story that this game entails. As usual, I do not spoil much about the storylines and I will not be making an exception today.
As this is a port of a previously released game, many reviewers have spent a ton of time discussing the graphics and mostly slammed the effort made by Ubisoft. I strongly disagree with most made comments, I do think this game looks fine for a remaster. Sure, it may sometimes have some small frame drops, but it never bothered me much, the story kept me so occupied, that what some described as disturbing, it mostly went unnoticed.
And with that, I would very much like to state it once again, graphics do not make the game. This game specifically is a great example of a great game idea from late 2012. Now some of us get to play it for the first time ever (myself included) and I can only say I really enjoyed it. I loved the action and it just felt like it belonged on a portable console like the Nintendo Switch.
It took me just a few seconds to get used to the parkour system and once you see the course you need to go, you get to the next part in the story in no time. Assassin’s Creed 3 positively surprised me and I hope this is merely the beginning for Ubisoft to bring the other games over to Switch as well.
In conclusion, Assassin’s Creed 3 caught me off guard by simply being a great game. Many reviewers called it a negative experience but this once again proves that reviews are just reviews and not gospel. My experience was great and my rating will reflect this. Would I have changed items of the game? Maybe in a perfect world, yes, but I clearly enjoyed what was presented to me in this remaster!
