Indie Corner: Undead Horde

Welcome to our review of Undead Horde, a game where you try to exterminate humanity by taking control of a necromancer!

Become a necromancer – raise the dead!
You’re a necromancer – a re-animator of the dead. Undead Horde is a necromantic action game with elements from action RPG, strategy and hack’n’slash. Re-animate almost any enemy and build an army of dozens of undead minions. Take command and send your undead war machine against the living and their leader King Paladin Benevictor. Equip your necromancer with endless amounts of loot and lead your army to ultimate victory!

I started heading into this game thinking it would be just same as the classical hackslashaction genre I have played before. I tend to not like games in this genre and I expected nothing less of this game to be blunt. I often find the musou genre to be superior not only because of the vast amount of enemies but also the presence of a more strategical background to survive.

Undead Horde perfectly incorporated all the good things and ended up being a great game. There is strategy, story, silly jokes about a John who knows nothing, … As you play the necromancer role, prepare to revive fallen foes and enemies as your own and as you progress, you get to command more and better ones. In the world hub (so to speak) you got a lot of statues that show you how many of the depicted animals/people you have slain and how many remain until you can start controlling them too!

This is where the strategy really comes in, do you need archers to attack from afar or do you need the brute strength of others to break through? Undead horde provides more than a challenge in this eternal question, sure you can revive the fallen, but as long as you do not break the houses, the enemies will keep coming. Maybe I should say the good guys? The irony in this game is quite ingenious, haha.

So let me talk about the thin balance between death and life (pun intended). I often balanced in between both in this game, respawning more than I would have liked, but that added to the fun of things. Despite being on the tougher side of the spectrum, I never felt like the game was straight up impossible. I just needed a different approach to certain areas. I have even gone as far as just attack the houses in order to keep the enemies from respawning.

I tried getting my armies more in tune with the enemies, I tried a lot. Nothing beats a chicken army, but yeah.

The game did get somewhat easier along the way, most likely due to getting known to the ways to attack the enemies. I know when to employ more archers and when to get my chicken army ready. Obtaining Mana and fireball attacks sure did help too! There really is a lot to do and learn in Undead Horde.

Graphically, this game really is on par with any game of a similar genre and that is all ok. Graphics do not make the game, Undead horde excels in pure gameplay and wits and the sly learning curve! You will have loads of fun once you get into it and I am delighted I got the chance to play this game!

In conclusion, Undead Horde is one of those games that might not be for everyone, but it did grab my attention and I intend to invest time and effort to see how far I get in destroying the human race!
