Akane is a brutal arena arcade slasher based on one-hit-one-kill gameplay mechanics where you will:Face five types of opponents:
● Yakuza Guy – a common mafia pawn;
● Tank – this is the only villain that will require more than just one katana slash to die;
● Shooter – a sharpshooter with cybernetic enhancements. Pro tip: they never miss;
● Cyber Ninja – a warrior who abdicated his body to become a killing machine. His dash attacks are deadly and his defense seems impenetrable. Remember however that everybody has their weak point;
● The Boss – Katsuro, your Nemesis who evolves, gets stronger and more dangerous according to the number of times he gets killed.
Akane is a simplistic game in idea, but marvelous in execution. I only made one mistake, that was to ignore the optional tutorial. I know, I am always asking for them, but as a 1 hit kill game, I thought the game mechanics would be easy to understand and after a few games, I thought I was getting the hang of things after all.
I was surprised to see multiple more mechanics were still to be discovered while playing the tutorial and among things, I learned how to block enemies… Yeah, I know, shame on me, right?
What the tutorial brought me, was the ability to go deeper into this game. I was suddenly able to survive a lot longer and enjoy it so much more. Sure, it is all about slashing the enemies before they take you down, but when you suddenly got extra ways to take them down, it became less of a mission impossible.
The game implements a system where you can run out of energy and that was when the tutorial really saved me, I was able to stay alive more than once thanks to properly learning to play. Not just by blocking inbound attacks but by shooting down the enemies.
I must admit that a simplistic game had me more amused than I would have thought initially. Within minutes of starting this game, I already knew the moniker hidden gem would apply to Akane, it just grabs you by the arm in the arcade and shoves a ton of coins down the machine and then… Then you decide to really take on the game in front of you.
Addicting is probably the right word to describe this game and I can only say I had so much fun playing this game, I recommend looking into it a lot more!
In conclusion, Akane is a simple yet addictive game, I wish many more as it existed since the feeling you get while playing this game is very satisfying!
