If there’s one player in the Pro Controller market for PlayStation 4 that’s worth your attention, it’s Nacon. The company already proved themselves worthy with a rather impressive line of controllers aimed at the more professional gamer. The Nacon Revolution Unlimited is the newest of the bunch and combines wireless with wired gaming. Looking for a professional controller? This might be the one you need to have.
Out of the box
Since the Nacon Revolution Unlimited is a professional controller, it comes at a higher price, even if you compare it with its competitors. The reason for this higher price is, of course, the quality of the controller itself. You’ll be very pleased if you open the box for the first time. Inside the box, you’ll find a hard case to carry your controller with you everywhere you want, including all the content you need for a great experience. When it comes to the controller itself, it looks similar to the Nacon Revolution Pro 2 Controller. Meaning you’ll get an Xbox-styled PlayStation 4 controller, perfect for gamers who don’t like having their two thumbsticks next to each other.
Of course, since this controller is labeled as the Unlimited version, it does come with some design changes. First things first, the metallic touches. By combining its smooth black surface with metallic sticks and grey action buttons, this is by far the best-looking Nacon controller yet. Everything about it looks incredibly good, already showcasing why this is a premium controller. Besides that, you’ll once more find four extra programmable buttons on the back and those are conveniently placed just behind your grip. In my opinion, this is the best placing for those buttons and already a great advantage over the Pro 2. On the back, you’ll also find your saved profiles, a handy switch to change those profiles and your voice/volume controls. It’s all placed with a great sense of style but the fun doesn’t stop there.
Wireless
The big difference between the Unlimited and the Pro 2, is, of course, the ability to use this one as a wireless controller. Offering a wireless controller to a pro gamer might seem like a strange thing to do, especially when you take in the ‘risks’ of a wireless controller. The connection can get lost, a small input delay might occur, those are just two examples of what could go wrong; and yet, Nacon chooses to release a wireless controller. Are they mad? Not at all! Don’t forget they are in the game for a couple of years and they know what professional gamers want and need. The Revolution Unlimited comes with a handy Bluetooth USB receiver that you simply need to insert in one of the PS4’s available USB ports. You can change the direction the receiver is facing to keep the connection as good as possible. During my tests, I never suffered from disconnection and never did I notice any input lag. I tested it playing Apex most of the time, so you might imagine that I really couldn’t allow technical difficulties to stay on top of my game. Above all of this comes a respectable battery life of 7 hours, granting you enough time to play your favorite games between reloading your controller. The wireless connection works flawlessly and it’s perhaps the biggest innovation compared to the other Revolution controllers.
Not a fan of wireless controllers? No problem, this one got you covered too. With a simple flick of the button on the back, you switch between wired and wireless mode. If you use the controller as a wired one, you’ll need to use the USB-C cable that comes packed with the controller. This is the same one that was used in the Pro 2 controller, so it already proved it’s more than capable to hold up during intense gaming sessions. It’s a solid and long cable that can’t be pulled out of the PS4 or controller easily.
The same great features
Besides the wireless inclusion and a better global layout and style, the controller comes very close to its predecessors when you look at the functions it houses. You can still create a couple of different profiles and map out the buttons using the great software (for Mac and PC), and you can still easily change between those profiles. This is a great feature if you play different genres a lot. You can program your FIFA buttons and Apex buttons on one controller for example, and change them in just mere seconds. The glowing ring on the controller shows you which profile you’re currently using. It’s something Nacon included in their Pro controllers a while back but it’s good to see that it’s still functional and ready to go.
The same goes for the weight of the controller. If you’re unhappy with its weight or balance in your hands, you can insert different weights into the grips. It’s something you’ll most likely do once but that’s just the strength of it too. If you find that sweet spot for your personal play style, you won’t need to change those weights afterwards. The controller really delivers everything you expect from a professional controller.
Conclusion
The Nacon Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller offers another improvement over the Revolution Pro 2 Controller. If you’re looking for a professional controller that can be used both wirelessly and wired, this one is a no-brainer as it’s simply the best currently on the market. If you already own a Nacon Pro Controller, this isn’t really worth the upgrade since it offers more of the same but it’s without a doubt the most stylish one of the bunch. If you take your PlayStation 4 skills seriously, you’ll really need to consider getting one of these, they’ll certainly improve your skills a lot.
