Hands-on: The Lego Movie 2 – Videogame

Today we got the opportunity to test out the upcoming The Lego Movie 2 – Videogame. Yet again, this game ties in seamlessly with the movie and lets you interact with all your favorite characters from the movie.

A few much-needed changes

I was able to play for about 90 minutes which was just enough to get through the first 2 levels and test out a sort of sandbox-hub-level. The first level had a certain Mad Max feel to it and served more as an introduction to the new features this Lego game has to offer.

Some of you might be a bit over saturated with the amount of Lego-based games released in recent years. WB games must’ve done their research because they changed quite a bit in their upcoming Lego game.

The core mechanics of going through levels while using the famous bricks as your means to progress is obviously still there. The changes made emphasize the building aspect much more than ever before. Breaking everything still gets you money studs but most of them also offer some colored bricks. These bricks are needed to build certain things like sprinklers, trampolines, vehicles and much more. These brick contraptions are all needed to complete certain objectives so the story can advance. Completing certain “quests” get you master builder plans. These allow you to build even bigger structures like shops, houses, and spaceships.

Build your own world

Once you complete a level you go to a world which serves as a sort of home base. It’s pretty empty at first but here you can build your own world by using the schematics you found in each level. When you build your “rocket-house” you can start the second level which takes place in space. I shot some gameplay footage for you to enjoy.

Like any Lego game, The Lego Movie 2 – videogame offers a huge amount of stuff to collect. Just following the main quests will only scratch the surface of what you can do in this game. Collecting everything will be no small feat factoring in the size of the levels I got presented with. They definitely went with a more open-world approach for this one.

The Lego Movie 2 – videogame

The fresh take on the mechanics and the heavy focus on the builds have the potential to really be the fresh wind the Lego games needed. I, for one, can’t wait to play more of the Lego Movie 2 – videogame has to offer.
